  • poached eggs the old fashioned way?

i really fancy poached eggs on toast but don't like the way the egg poacher does them.. the white is too thick

how do you do them the old fashioned way? i vaguely remember my mum doing them in a pan of hot water and i think it involved vinegar?

i've also heard there's a way of doing them in the microwave in water but i've not got a clue how to do that

    anyone know?

I boil a shallow pan of water, turn down the heat, add a dash of vinegar (don't know why), swirl the water and add the egg.

I then turn off the heat and put a lid on, and leave until done (couple of minutes)

similar to TwoSheds except I break the egg into a saucer(s) before adding to the water

can you do two at the same time or do you have to do them one at once?

Yes, Two Sheds' way is the way I do it too. I add a little salt and white wine vinegar to the water, apparently the vinegar is to stop the white from spreading around the pan too much (I might be wrong though!). I find that I can do 3 eggs at a time with vinegar but only 1 without. It takes exactly the same amount of time to poach the eggs as it takes for the toaster to pop the toast up

Similar to us, we add some vinegar to the boling water but we crack the egg into a cup and then lower gently into the pan.

I just do them ina pan of water, nothing else, four at a time.

Oh, and don't throw the water away. Pour it over weeds, same with water from hard boiling eggs. Don't know why but it kills 'em dead.

I put one egg into one saucer, but then I love washing up!

On the domestic front it might seem like the old fashioned way, but all top chefs poach eggs this way. Sounds like you've just moved up to top chef ranking.

I think the best fun is swirling the water as fast as you can and then dropping the egg in! I don't put anything in the water, just drop the eggs in and the faster the swirl the better it holds together.
