    Places to visit in Suffolk

    Following on From Shirl's request for information on Bristol, I thought I'd ask you for suggestions for places to visit in Suffolk. Cheeky, or what?

    Me and my DH will be taking the Caravan to a site near Leiston next week, and would be pleased to hear of any interesting places to while away our time. Good eateries, quaint villages, museums, gardens, walks, drives, whatever really!

    We'll be going up on this coming Sunday, and back the following Saturday. Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

    I know, I could trawl the 'net, but I'd rather have 'proper' recommendations. Thanking you in advance.

      I have visited Lavenham in Suffolk. Its a very nice quaint village.

        I'LL pop my proper thinking cap on later & maybe come up with some more ideas,but Leiston is really close to Walberswick..beautiful little seaside village,also Southwold is just round the corner....both slightly pricey,but well worth the visit.
        If you're into bird watching,then Minsmere is also close...the RSPB have a really good bird reserve there.
        If you go the other way down(or up?)coast you've got Sizewell!,but also Aldeburgh & Thorpeness...Thorpeness has a boating lake & The House in the Clouds.
        and then if you get really bored,you can come to Ipswich & see the chicks...I'll maybe even make you a brew!

          Sizewell? Google Maps

          Seriously though, Woodbridge (to the south) is lovely. I'd recommend Spice Bar & Restaurant Woodbridge Suffolk | Reservations call 01394 382557 for food.

          Then you've got Southwold to the north (the pier is very quaint) Southwold Pier - Home
          Loads of lovely places to eat.
          Then you can walk from Southwold to Walberswick across the marsh and take the little ferry boat too The Southwold - Walberswick Ferry

          (Wobbleswick to the locals): The Bell Inn is superb for food. The Bell at Walberswick > Adnams Hotels


          There's also Dunwich and Aldeburgh nearby (google them for lots of info)

            Places to miss: Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth. Rundown seaside towns full of chavs and OAPs (and me)

              oh, Norwich might be worth a trip. Loads of pubs (real ale if you like that), nice shops, lovely riverside walk, a castle ... http://www.visitnorwich.co.uk/documents/310.pdf

                While I'm thinking...are you hapy to drive far or would you rather things closeby to Leiston?

                  Sudbury (where I lived for a while) lovely old market town and the birthplace of Constable (I think, I know its a famous artist anyway), but also you have Lavenham as suggested, with the great purple house if its still there.
                  Not far is Long Melford, with Horatio Nelsons ancestral home, and more antique shops than I have ever seen.

                    youve shattered my dream of re-visiting great yarmoth.last time i was there i was a lad (im 53 now)on holiday with my mum ! mind you all i can remember was watching john wayne "true grit" on the cinema. now ill have to dream of re-visiting weymoth instead.

                      Yes it's lovely - bit too near home though, as is Sudbury, but cheers anyway.

                      We'll be near Sizewell. FIL worked at Bradwell for years, so DH will be interested anyway! Never been to Aldeburgh, but been recommended by loads of people, also the House in the Clouds. We will be popping down to Ipswich at some point, as we have to visit the Caravan dealer on Colchester Road. (Coffee, white, one sugar! )

                      Yup, don't like either town! We occasionally spend time in Suffolk, as it's not too far to go (Disco not that cheap to run with 'Van on the back!), but far enough that you feel you've had a break!

                      Anyway, work to do, but I'll have a look at the links you've posted first. Thanks all!

                        Newmarket - The National Stud to go on a trip around see all the facilities, the stallions and the broodmares and foals - lots this time of year. Then pop down to the racing museum and have a break in their cafe. Sometimes at this time of the year yards have open days as well.

                        Southwold is lovely and charming.

                          Forgot to mention Orford!
                          Nice pub,castle & lighthouse and a particulrly good smokehouse!
                          and also if you like castles...Framlingham!Wonderful castle & grounds...and an excellent moat(empty!)that you can roll down if the urge takes you!A lovely little old town too!

                          We're just off Colchester rd,so if you get five mins....or if we like you maybe longer!....definately give us a shout!

                            Bury st Edmunds is worth alook. Sat and Wed are market days and there are loads of eateries. I would recomend the white horse at beyton, a little village just out side Bury, the Bunbury Arms at Great Badwell, Risby just past Bury has a place that sells antiques and bric brac, very interesting to see what they class as antique, like me you will probably see things you used to or still use and that made me feel old as some of the stuff I recognised and the bloke selling had no idea. I am roughly the same age as you. Back to Bury, the old abbey ruins and gardens are worth a shufty and free, the cathedral and service mens church also if you like places of interest. I do believe that the food in the Fox and Hounds is good and the One Bull but pricey. if it has been so long since you went to yarmouth go for a quick look. I go every now and then to see how awfull it can really be. Lowestoft, well, I saw the sea though a break in the wall as we drove down the front anf thought it was car park till I saw it moving. Southwold is a pretty place and a good drop of beer to. Sutton Hoo at Woodbridge is good and the first radar station was biult there. I could go on but there is plenty around so enjopy your visit to our bootiiful county.
