    our reception lottie

    My school is in an area of social deprevation and the children who attend have poor diets, limited access to safe outdoors spaces and very poor dental health.

    One of the things I felt was a priority was to get them eating healthily and to encourage them to sow veggies and to eat and try new veg.

    Today we harvested courgettes, onions, peas, carrots and strawberries off out little plot and it was thrilling to see these once veggie phobic children munching their way through the fresh produce they had grown.

    It was a joy.
    When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

      Hurrah! Just brilliant........... every school should have one, or more.

      Not only for the benefits of understanding where food comes from etc, but Science, Maths and English grow on the back of this too.
      Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

          Thts fantastic miffy! We are having our first meeting looking at setting up a veg patch this morning, wish me luck!! Sunds like our schools are similar too.
          Hmmmm ..... I might have to get back to you and pick your brains!

              To keep your good work going let us know what you would like to grow next year, I'm sure if I don't have what you want from the excesses of the seed parcels others I'm sure would be willing to offer

                It's amazing how children will eat something they have grown (or some mucky bread roll they've played with for half an hour!) but not shop stuff. We know as adults the thrill of eating what you've grown. I think we sometimes under-estimate children - they share our enthusiasm for the reults of their own work.

                Well done for helping them to find that, Miffy.

                  Yep, please do, I am having a meeting tomorrow morning re some possible funding to get raised beds put in, 'proper' edging and paths and also some grants for tools, seed and plants will let you know what they say and what you need to do. Have you joined the RHS/Waitrose scheme that is brill, lots of advice and veggie seeds too. Good luck.

                    Nope, not much bit of a work aholic when it comes to my unit. Love it, that I put my heart and soul into it, i really want to make a difference to these little bods as they are all our futures.

                        One of the very best things I have ever seen in my life was a little chap we have with significant learning needs, he has the age of a 24 month old but is five, when he tried his very first ever strawberry, he didn't even know what it was, never seen one before,the look of awe, pleasure and sheer amazement that something he had helped plant had grown, flowered and then matured into a 'garden sweetie' as he called it was such joy for me. He keeps checking now every day to see if more 'magic' has happended and more have appeared.
