off topic - plastering

Plastering is quite easy when you learn the knack! Between us, we managed to plaster all 3 extensions on the house and re-plaster the bathroom.

It would have cost us a fortune to get a plasterer in. In the end we saved ourselves �100's! Also learned a new skill or 2 :-)

Go for it, i think you'll have great fun, the money you'll save alone will be worth the out lay of the course...Good Luck with it.

I have seen people try and fail without training. Hilarious attempts at getting plaster to stay on the wall and not slide off. I am not sure I could be trained but I suppose you never know til you try - does the course come with a money back gaurantee?

Wishing you lots of luck, its a great skill to have - your OH can be sending you out on private jobs!

I'd do the course, it's not as easy as it looks. Although, it should be a bit easier on new walls, at least they're flat(ish). But having watched my OH and friend trying to plaster a wall, and then watched a pro do it, I'd definitely say 'do the course'

Could you have a go first and see how you get on? I'm shorter than a very short person but I've done reasonable expanses of wall to an 'ok' level. Don't think I'd attempt a ceiling though. Maybe worth getting a professional in for that and doing the walls yourselves?

Janey it's much more difficult than it looks. The OH used to be "on the tools" as he calls it, he was never a professional plasterer, but he can do it, albeit slowly. There's so much that can go wrong - firstly, buy the plaster fresh, anything older than about three weeks will go off faster than you can get in on the walls, so it will look as if it's been applied with a catapult

Often used to wonder how a plasterer could need a five year apprenticeship to master his trade...........................................

until I tried it myself!

A good plasterer is worth his weight in gold!

Another vote for going on the course. If you are a shortie, you can always hire in platforms that you stand on, then you'll reach the top of the walls.
