Default New section in Tescos

Just got back from a foray in Tescos - they've got a new aisle in my nearest full of dalek composters, water butts, wormeries and bokashi composters!

Bokashi composters are going for £40 with a two month supply of bran and the wormeries are those Can 'o' worms jobbies with a voucher for the worms for £90 (I think).

They also had a rather strange contraption which looked like an upside down ice cream cornet (but much bigger and green lol) which the blurb said wasn't a composter and wasn't bokashi but you can put all of your kitchen waste in - anyone care to enlighten me?

They're also doing two for one on energy saving bulbs and loads of offers on lagging, insulation etc

Well, that's me happy - shoes, clothes, jewellery and composters all under one roof! lol

Mods - feel free to move if you think this should be somewhere else

The ice cream is a Green Cone - someone's spoken about it on here recently. You have to half bury the thing in the garden. Not sure that you get compost, just a way to trash the bones of the joint!

Did you notice how much the water butts were by any chance?

I've just bought my compost bin, my waterbutt and wormery after searching for ages for bargains. I will run screaming down that aisle if I find something cheaper!

If you do want wormeries/compost bin though, I would always check first if your council helps you get bargains through the recycle now website (Home Composting).

The Green Cones are Food Digesters. You put all cooked food in that you cannot Compost, Bread, Meat cooked veg.

They are only green because they stop this stuff going to the landfill. But all they do is digest the food and make your garden the land fill site.

You have to dig the bottom cone into the ground down to 24" then you put the top cone on and fill it up with scrapps. After two years you have to move it because it polutes the ground. I think that if you are on clay and your topsoil is not 24" it just rots in the cone.

Bokashi thing from recyclenow arrived 15 minutes or so ago. It stinks. Only paid £23 for 2 buckets plus the bran.

Last edited by multiveg; 06-02-2008 at 04:22 PM. Reason: forgot the bran!

The water butt they have in the store is the slimline 100ltr. one at £25 & it includes the connector, tap & stand, the similar one on the website is 175ltr one for about £15 & I don't think it has a stand. Tesco's new 'green section' might not be there forever though, in our store it's in the 'seasonal' section & that usually means they disappear after a few weeks/months.

Sadly I did check our council- Doncaster, but they have no offers on at the moment. I can't really complain because they gave away Bokashi bins free last year.

Yes we got one from our Worcs council too, a black compost bin with opening door at the bottom but I paid nothing as they messed me about for 3 years before they finally delivered me one with a £5 refund that I had originally paid. I should think for compost bin, your local council should have some sort of scheme to encourage composting at home.

I got a compost bin free from our council when I signed up to the recycling scheme a year or so ago before the recycling became 'compulsory'. The 'new section' in our Tesco has now gone - it's been replaced by easter eggs!
