  • My Wonderful Wattson

I grew up in a family where 'thrift' was definately the order of the day.

Modern-day excess seems to have crept up on us tho.

It can be hard to see how lifestyles change when the change apparently so gradual... Before you know it your little portable telly is a huge plasma screen and there are three mobile phones on charge in the kitchen where the trim phone used to be

So the other month I bought a Wattson.

    DIY KYOTO

OMG how it has changed our lives !!

When I first plugged it in it glowed red and showed 5000+kw/h (this is without ovens or other power guzzelers on )

We've unplugged stuff, changed lightbulbs, decomissioned a fridge and a freezer. We've chopped the plug off the evil tumble dryer as it's way to easy to bang in the odd load

    We're now down to a nominal 600w/h

Wattsons are not cheap, but they're a great idea. Someone should lease them for a month at a time to help get the message accross.

What an excellent piece of kit. If I had the money to spare, I would consider one. Renting them out to people to help start better habits seems a good idea too. Would really like to save more energy-money where I can.

Would be interesting to see what we're using - but not interesting enough to spend that kinda cash.

I think Eon are promoting something similar (but far less expensive) for their customers...

        Good idea.

We are starting from the other direction!!!
Until Christmas last year we lived in caravan with just a solar panel charging a 12v battery for power. This year we moved into part of the house and have only a temporary 6kw supply. Its amazing how much we took for granted before we came out here - with all appliances plugged in and ready to go.
I am much happier with this simpler life (although when the house is finished and I have a dishwasher, tumble dryer, oven and washing machine that works I might change my mind!!!???)

They are a brilliant idea. It might even get Mr Sheds to stop leaving all the appliances on effing Standby, and the phone charging all night long

It's a brilliant idea Maf, but at £149 + and the electricians charges for installations it's a bit pricey.
Maybe it should be compulsory for the utilities suppliers to fit them to the meters so that we can see what we are burning.
That would sure make us turn some things down - or off.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

How long do you spend going round after him turning it all off properly?

I this like a really sofisticated verion of one of these?

Maplin > Plug-In Mains Power and Energy Monitor

I've been thinking of getting one of these recently to do an 'Enegry Audit' on our home, as a background prep for solar panels or a wind turbine....

The Maplin unit only tells you how much juice the appliance plugged into it is using.

A Wattson measures the total electrical load of your house. The software that comes with it (called Holmes !) draws graphs to illustrate peak times etc which is cool.

My OH has just bought two new monitors for his office (at home) as he found out they were using 400 watts each. The new ones use 40 watts.

                        Hi, s'me again

Maf, is the Wattson like one of these? Efergy Wireless Saving Electricity Energy Monitor Meter on eBay, also, Home Automation, Gadgets, Consumer Electronics (end time 15-Jun-08 16:32:17 BST)

Does the Wattson just give you the total household load and change the load as you unplug things? That's what this one seems to be doing at least?
