  • My PC is Busted?

Tried to install a wireless router tonight to my pc. I couldn't get the pc to connect to the internet but it managed to connect to laptop but again no internet. Got really sick of it so I pulled the LAN cables out and put it back the way it was. Now all the pc does is boot up as far as the windows loading bar screen then says no signal and switches the monitor off for power saving.
To say I am annoyed is an under statement
    Anyone got any ideas?

When the PC is starting up (when it's past the bios but before Windows loading) press F8 and go into safe mode. When in safe mode set the resolution (you will only have an option of 800x600), reboot and you should go into windows. Then you can reset the resolution back to normal.

This usually happens when you install a new driver the Video driver gets knocked out. You might have to find your video drivers from their website and reinstall them if it doesn't allow you to set your normal resolution.

If it were me, I'd switch everything off, remove all cables and re-do them as per normal and remove any disks that might be in any drives (the wireless router installation disk perhaps) leave for 10 mins and re-boot as normal.

Sometime things just stop talking to each other (I had a printer that had to be on 1st as laptop would talk to printer when switched on but printer wouldn't talk to laptop if laptop was on first)

I know when I set up my wirless stuff it was a bit tricky. I had to install the airport card and then configure my network preferences because the installation disk didn't do it automatically but I'm MAC not PC, sorry!

Cheers guys that sounds like some good advice. I will give it a try and let you know.
I don't think I will try the wireless thing again.

Tried pressing F8 and it came up with a selection of first boot devices. I have no idea what to do. This could be worth a free bag of spuds to the person that can solve this for me.

Have you got a wireless adapter on the pc or are you connecting pc via LAN cable to router?

I presume the laptop has integral wifi?

New router had internet cable into it and then ethernet connection to the pc. Laptop has built in wifi. It was fine until i pulled the ethernet cable out and inserted the internet cable back into the pc and then that was it.

Hi Tattieman you pressed f8 to early wait aprox 10 - 15 seconds ( try waiting 10 seconds first) then press f8,depending on your operating system it will come up with a list of options xp will give you the option to startup with last safe settings

vista will give you a option to repair your computer try these in the first instance and let me know what happens if this resolves the issue

its probably better to disconnect all items printers scaners usb ethernet cable and switch wireless off so your left with just the computer on

Why did you pull the cable out?

I'd connect everything back as it was, switch everything off for 10 seconds then switch on again.

You need to reset the router and internet as it assigns unique IP addresses to each computer it is networked to.

Cheers enrich100 I will try that. Computers are so annoying when things go wrong.
I will let you know tomorrow.

Pressing F8 should show you a list of options, one of them should be boot into safe mode, do you see this, if yes then choose Safe mode, if it goes into Windows the screen will look funny but ignore this. If you get this far then I would do a system restore to an earlier point, this is found in Programs > Accesssories > System Tools > System Restore.

PS If on F8 you get an option for boot devices do you see one for hard drive and also check that you havent left a CD in the drive.

I know, computers kept me employed for over 15 years as a proffesional Computer Nerd, and I have had to deal with computers that have been drop kicked by there owners due to the frustration, some might say that microsoft made these errors just to keep people like me in employment, I couldn't possibly comment

if you can't resolve it let me know, I can take you through a few more options,
its probably better to start afresh tommorow you are less likely to throw it out the window

You can talk me through setting up a new router if and when i can fix it. TEB I will make sure there are no discs or anything in the pc and try again.

Windows updates were at fault and a quick boot up with windows disk solved it.
Cost me £40 but it is no use to me if it doesn't work.
                            Thanks for the help everyone.
