  • My holiday is no more...

Heard on the radio this morning that XL airways has gone into administration. No flights at all. I am still in a state of shock. Only received my tickets yesterday.

We booked through an agent and are ATOL protected, but no idea what that means and how long it will take us to get our money back. Phoned the helpline, but it was useless. Only told me to phone my agent who don't open to 9am.

I like to try, might not get far, but I like to try.

That's rubbish news. But, there will be other holidays; and at least you weren't actually on the holiday and unable to come home without paying a fortune to another airline.

As long you're ATOL protected or have paid with a credit card you'll get a refund - if you've booked flights only through their website then you aren't protected by ATOL.

Hope you get it all sorted and still get your holiday!

Oh I'm sorry! I was just reading about XL on the BBC news and thought about all the disappointed people. Sounds like you will at least get your money back. It's such a shame to look forward to something then be disappointed so maybe start immediately searching for a new holiday so you can start feeling excited again!

I heard about it on the radio yesterday. According to them you need to contact your agent in the first instance. Best of luck mate

The really maddening thing is that they knew before they sent you your tickets James. They greeted passengers with printed letters this morning - you don't get that done in 10 minutes and they were still taking people's money until yesterday. Wicked.

When was your holiday for, have you much time to re plan?

Hope you manage to get alternative flights, JL. I think it's soooo immoral of these companies to continue selling tickets - the wind-up of a company doesn't happen overnight and it's as though they couldn't give a stuff about the people on the other end.

How s**t is that. Something similar happened to me about 10 years ago, day before was told there was no holiday, the company had booked our flights under someone elses name! total scam! some people got to the airport, ready to fly and were told to go home! really hope you get your money back and can book something else.

So sorry about your holiday. I think you should be able to get your money back, but not much consolation if you're not able to book anything else before you were due to go. The board allegedly didn't take the decision till early this morning, I was awake when they announced it on Sky in the early hours. Feel really sorry for those people who are now waiting to get back home somehow.

Bummer James, so sorry for you and all the others in the same boat and the people who are now out of work.

                          Sorry to hear this!!

My sister was flying with them on 26 Sept, and she called her travel agent first thing, cancelled everything and had her holiday re-booked by 10am today, same hotel etc.

Her flights are apparantly rather rubbish, but she is now flying with Thomas Cook's own airplanes....

I think there was a £50 difference in the cost of the whole thing. She is very relieved. She did say that they offered to call her back, but she said that she didn't want calling back and wanted to sort it all out now.

Did you listen to the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 this morning? - if not then do so on the listen agin thingy on their website. They had a travel expert on their about what to do to get your money back. Aparently if you have booked a package & it is ATOL protected you should be able to book an alternative to the same value with another ATOL company like Thomas Cook etc & then they go about retreiving the money instead of you. (at least thats the gist i got - really, do listen to it.)
