Maybe the company has to do so through new legislation?

Perhaps he's like one of those old 19th century mill owners. You know, expects his work force to go to church on Sunday when it's their only day off, tells 'em alcohol is bad when it's their only escape, tells 'em thrift is good when they're skint anyway coz he doesn't pay 'em enough so they've no option. And obviously attends church himself too, abstains from the booze and is never wasteful.....not. Your boss has just jazzed it up for the 21C

Perhaps he watched those prats on The Apprentice with their 'environmental' card?

I really can't stand greenwash...perhaps you could suggest to your Boss that he show the way by publishing his carbon footprint or having a leave the car at home week - then see how he gets on!

We had a guy at our work the other week who was sat discussing the environment and promoting people's carbon footprint reduction.

When I asked him if he'd grown the banana he was eating himself, and if not did he think it was sourced locally, he became all sheepish and went quiet.

I'm trying to go green- we recycle as much as we can, plant trees, do the bokashi and wormery thing, however we do go on long haul holidays every year. We appreciate the fact that if we (ie everyone) stopped going on holidays it would ultimately cause suffering to the poor in those countries. We go to Cuba and Dominican Republic quite often and like to support their economy. These people are desperate for tourist money- why should they loss out? So for 2 weeks a year I have no guilt when i'm lying in the sun. For the rest of the year I'll walk as far as I can to save using the car etc etc.

Greenwash - what an interesting word.

As far as I'm concerned it is all a question of balance - I try to remember to turn off lights, turn down the heating - but if it is dark or cold I'll turn things on. I try to remember to recycle/reuse where ever practicable - but that is a key word - practicable!

In other words I ain't a saint but I usually try.

Hopefully I don't preach what I'm not prepared to do!

Petal - give your boss a WOW challenge (WOW - Walk on Wednesdays) Enlist support from around the office and get him sponsored to WOW for a month - send the money to the charity of your choice - maybe a 'green' one?

What I cant understand is why two English teams had to go all the way to Russia to play a game of flipping football with all their supporters following them how green is that

I was puzzled by that one too...

I think we should all do what we can and not castigate those who do less than we think they can (does that make sense!) because if they're like me then they'll think 'why bother at all'? I do all the usual things (reduce/recycle/reuse/compost/no plastic bags/buy local/drive less/always walk children to school etc) but wouldn't dream of preaching or shouting at people - that isn't the way to engage and inspire!

I just get really cross with companies spreading the idea that you can buy your way to a greener lifestyle - people don't need new products all the time, just need to make better use of what they have!

It'll be interesting to see whether the 'credit crunch' makes people greener - hmm

Apparently the cost of petrol is making people reduce their driving.
There are two angles the Government hasn't tried yet to promote Green thinking:
1) Hit them in the wallet. A series of ads showing how much cash you waste leaving lights on in empty rooms, letting taps drip, etc. Most people care more about saving cash than they do the planet.
2) We like to believe everything was wonderful in Britain during World war Two - when they recycled EVERYTHING, and you could be prosecuted for wasting food. Appeal to that nostalgic belief. But don't lets reintroduce prosecuting people for feeding the birds, which was something else they did then!

He he, no they just get issued on Thursdays mostly, and we subsequently get them delivered today. I check through them to make sure our ads are well placed.
