  • Music recommendations for a rabid guitarist please?

My 18 year old likes music that's, well, musical (I think it's something to do with being a musician - you actually listen properly rather than just accepting anything that's fashionable) and he's devouring music faster than we can grow it...

I introduced him to the original Fleetwood Mac (the Peter Green version) a couple of weeks ago and I think his poor head chef has probably had an overdose of their music by now. Has anyone got any suggestions to save the poor man's sanity?

Heitor Villa-Lobos... bit modern, but with a lovely south American twist... might be too classical though.

Cant agree with you an Santana Im afraid His music is extremely smooth, and his guitar playing on the not-too-bad side of things, but I find the music all rather 'look-at-me-Im-a-guitar-god-and-wonderful-with-it' samey.
For true guitar greatness, look towards Tommy Emmanuel (a spectacular acoustic player from Oz), Satriani (frequently the target of much hate on forums etc because he is popular, but his melodic style is extremely varied, and a hell of a lot to 'listen' to if the aim is both music and guitar learning), a french canadian chap called Eric Mongrain (do a Youtube for 'Airtap' - its astonishing) has an acoustic style like few others.
More mainstream might be any of the work of Slash (again, the target of much dislike because of his Guns n Roses stuff, but phenomenaly talented especially in the blues area). As noted above, Dylan (hopeless singer and average player, but wonderful lyricist).
          There's a few for ya.

Ah, the real Fleetwood Mac, before Buckingham Nicks came along and ruined it, Green Manalishi, fantastic.

Another vote for Santana, or how about Rory Gallagher, or Gary Moore or Mark Knopfler. Surprised no-one's mentioned Clapton yet, or is that too obvious? Sorry I'm showing my age.

Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page. Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, I could go on.

Concerto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo. Classical but classic if you see what I mean? Any guitarist would love it.

Depends what you are after, but THE guitar instrumentalist (ie the tune from the guitar is the whole purpose of the thing, rather than accompanying songs) is still Hank Marvin.

I wholeheartedley commend you on your choice. Has he tried anything by Gordon Giltrap, The Eagles,(the Joe Walsh era) Ritchie Blackmore in his Deep Purple days and of course David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. I was going to say Dave Murray of Iron Maiden but perhaps thats for week three!

As an ex pro I just recommend listening to as many different guitarists and styles as possible.
