  • Mashed potato

My stored potatoes were coming to the end of their life, a number of the larger ones had developed internal necrosis (brown spot). The problem though, was knowing which were OK because the outsides looked fine on all of them. I've just finished a marathon spud peeling session, reminded me of the old films where the 'bad' soldiers were set to peeling mountains of potatoes.
6 steamer baskets later (2 sessions of 3), I've got 12lb of plain cooked mashed potato for the freezer, packaged in portion size containers.

I've got some sprouting garlic cloves that need attention next, but I think I'll do those after I get back from my appointment this afternoon

Have to say BS I tried freezing mash but it didn't work. Maybe it depends on the variety. Ok in soups though.

Well saved BS, waste not want not. I love having mash in the freezer, it's such a time saver. Can't stand the bought stuff though.

I tend to find it works OK if mashed, not so good as lumps in stews/curries etc. I often do things like fish pie and shepherd's pie that have mashed potato toppings and then freeze. When they are defrosted and re-heated they've been fine. I've left it plain so I can add salt, milk, butter to taste, depending on what I intend it for.

I have only 1 thing to say about mashed potato.... YUK!
Reminds me of school dinners, and I've never got over the dislike.
For shepherd's pie, tolerable, served as a veg I HATE THE MUCK!
Oddly enough, although I don't like mashed swede either, the combined version (Clapshot) I really like!

Pretty sure I've said this before but I like my mash just dry mashed, not cream or butter or whipping for goodness sake, just nice potato taste with some texture that doesn't ooze through your teeth. Didn't realise until I was about 16 that this wasn't normal and am glad that I don't like the fattening stuff that according to the cookery shows is essential.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

You should see mashed potato after OH has done it, so much butter it looks yellow and enough salt to ... words fail me. I can't eat it. Even son No2 the other day complained that the gravy was repelled by the amount of fat his dad had put in. That's why I've done plain, he can add all the unhealthy stuff he wants, and we don't need to suffer (and I didn't have enough butter in the fridge anyway ). I sometimes do seperate shepherd's pies, so none of us complain

There is a variety that when mashed doesn't freeze well! It sort of goes into textured grains rather than a smooth mash, and tastes odd as well...............but I can't remember which variety, sorry!

Thinking about it...it may have been Vivaldi
