  • Loosing interest in growing my own and dont know why.

Hi all. Don`t really know how to put this but here goes.

Some may know that about 2 years ago i took on my first allotment and then subsequently a second plot. They were both in a very sorry state but slowly and surely single handedly i managed to reach a stage with them i was proud of.

My first years planting was last year and overall was pleased with the results.
So please can anyone tell me what may be behind my lack of enthusiasm because i can`t put my finger on it .

I have handed over my second plot to someone on the waiting list but am clinging to the first in a hope i can rekindle the enthusiasm of only a few months ago.
I am quite angry with myself for it.
Has anyone been through this and more importantly found a way out off it.

    Thanks Minty Xxxx

Well, it could just be winter blues.
See how you feel come springtime. Maybe allotmenting just isn't for you: it isn't everyone's idea of fun

How do you feel about sowing seedlings and watching them come up?

      How's the gardening business going?

Sometimes, when a hobby becomes a business it loses all excitement...is it that?

Is it just growing that you've lost your Ooomph for? Or are you feeling generally Blaaaah about everything?

Hi my local friend, Oh the excitement of a seedling growing is still a magical thing for me and the cutting of a crop even more so but i can`t, sorry "don`t" seem to make the time.

The gardening business idea was a bit of a no show sadly.
I do visit the allotment about once a fortnight(used to be every other day) look around at things that need doing but can`t seem to apply myself. Maybe i`m getting lazy in my old age.
            Thanks Minty Xxx

don't feel angry - that is wasted emotion, you need to find out why you feel like this.

Try answering some of the questions posted above, even if only to yourself.

              - Cover the lottie over and leave it be for now
              - Pull back on what you are doing
              - Focus on one thing (say, one plant or group of plants) and nuture that
              - pick up lots of garden books/magazines and read
              - allow yourself time-out without feeling guilty

                Eh up.

Perhaps you were doing too much...I'd go with what Piskie said and try to maybe grow a smaller area for a while.

To be honest Minty, it's the time of year when I generally have a big Bleugh on gardening - I could be pot & tray washing, or seed box sorting, or any number of other little jobs, but to be honest I can't be @rsed. No worries, it's Christmas! I'll get a flush of enthusiasm as soon as my onion sets or potatoes or seed order arrives, and then I'll be away again for the year!
Have a break, don't feel bad about it If your enthusiasm doesn't fire up in the Spring, then worry

Hey Up Piskie, yeah, i have covered most of the plot, drowned myself in new seed catalogues and am looking forward to getting my chillies and parsnip started next month.
Must add i am not depressed about it just wish i could find the enthusiasm of a while ago and "get stuck in".

Like has been said maybe spring will relight the fire.
                      Thanks Minty

Hey dude. I'm in pretty much an identical situation, had my plot (first ever) for about the same amount of time, and am feeling a bit apathetic. However, I'm confident that come spring time all will be well, just hang on in there. Regret is a far more difficult emotion to deal with than anger.

Wayne you are absolutly spot on... Knowing me as only i do i would happily hand my plot over only to want another a month later.

The urge to want something you can not have is massive compared to the complacency of something you own..... Bloody Hell Minty being philosophical, My word.

Thanks for the Bday greetings buddy, Minty

                              Losing interest?

Who can tell mate, maybe the seasons are getting the better of you (long dark nights with not a lot inbetween).

Don't farmers have a fallow year where they let their fields rest for a year to rejuvenate themselves? Maybe we're the same and would benefit from it. Monty don from Gardeners world speaks regularly of his battles with the colder seasons and its effect on him. I'm only guessing but do you think you may have tried to achieve too much too soon, and experienced a bit of burnout in process?

With all the doom and gloom in the media who can blame anyone for thinking "WHAT'S THE POINT?"

But we know better... chin up
