  • light evenings

    I can't surely be the only one......can I?

I can now work on my plot until about 10pm + almost every night. I love these light evenings, but boy is it catching up with me.

In the winter I would normally crash out when I get in from work, and often am in bed by 9pm, so thats five evenings of rest in front of fire! and likewise at weekends.

Its so odd really, take a nice winters day, a Saturday say
Up and out on plot at 9am'ish in at say 4pm'ish - dusk!

    but on a summers day.....
Up and out on plot sometimes, 8am in at 10:15pm'ish

    so 7 hours in winter
    14! in summer - wow
ok so I would stop for lunch etc, but what a difference between the seasons

No wonder I feel so sleepy in the mornings!
anyone else in the same boat?

I was threatening to go yesterday morning (but the OH told me to go swimming "like a normal person" - I don't know anyone my age who swims or gardens at that hour, they're all still comatose!!).

I am going this evening after work though and hope to enjoy a good 3-4 hour session there at least (maybe even more if I can swing a half day!!). Love going at weekends too, but can't get anywhere near enough time - maybe early mornings at weekends is the way to go.....

But I have been very much enjoying just pottering around my little pocket hankerchief sized back garden the past few weeks in the evenings - watering, doing a little weeding, picking salad leaves and mangetout, and hoping that the rest of the veggie plants will grow a bit more soon. And in the garden, I can potter with glass of wine in hand (have to drive from plot, so water is as good as it gets and the plants need that more than me!).

We've been popping up to the lottie every evening from seven until after ten, going home, having a hot shower, reading for an hour then collapsing into bed. Then up at six for another hour or two before it gets too hot and OH has to toddle off to do other less important things (earning a living and boring stuff like that). Bliss.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Well its pretty well still daylight up here at midnight at the moment - simmer dim as it is known in Shetland. It is great, but yes I find I get to bed rather late and up early as it is broad daylight with the sun shining (ha ha some days) by 2 am.

I dont go to the Lottie at night but will have to start soon as I need my OH to help me do some stuff and to water everything.
He also needs to help me shut the gate as after 6pm it is supposed to be locked but I cant do it.

Don't worry Headfry....10 more days and the nights will be drawing in!!

( am I the first to think/say that???)

Have to admit though that being in France has got my bodyclock all messed up as the birds wake up later here- and it's still light until well beyond bedtime!!
Crazy what a few hundred miles south does!

At least we should look forward to the summer weather which follows the longest day...( have I just jinxed things ???)

Never enough time for fresh air me thinks!

Trouble for me is that the housework slips dreadfully this time of year. Got friends round for lunch tomorrow - at least they know me well enough by now! Have asked the kids to make an effort and help me tidy up a little bit more than usual before they go to bed as a treat - am determined to relax tomorrow and not do nufin!

Well I am heading out of the office to enjoy the fine evening on the plot - sure a cool 15 degrees and a little "light precipitation" never did anyone any harm, did it?! I am only kicking myself that I didn't throw the wellies into the car this morning as well - my gardening shoes hae a soddin great crack through the sole so I is going to be a wet drownded puppy.....

Thank you so much Nicos!!!!!! You've just upset me - we haven't even had a summer yet. I know the facts about daylight length I just don't particularly want to be reminded. The birds are still waking me up around 5 am at the mo, and at last I have time to get to the lottie after work whilst I can still see what I'm doing. Stuff's looking good, but I want to enjoy what we've got now without worrying about winter just yet.

I love this time of year for just that reason, still need my 8 hours sleep, but enjoy going out in the garden after tea for a few hours, stayed out till 9.30 digging last week, but the midges ate me alive Will remember the Avon dry oil body spray next time.
Once I am back up after this cold I will be back out in the garden in the evening. This lovely weather we have been having has been marvellous

Headfry - I really understand where you are coming from. I suffer from SAD and since I got my new job a couple of months ago I really have noticed the difference in actually having a window to look out of. Stange but true.
Agree with what you are saying about the daylight hours though.
