  • Light Bulbs!!!!?

    This is driving me potty!

We have twelve light-bulbs in our kitchen/diner. Three light units, each with four lights. They take GU10 bulbs, which blow with annoying regularity.

Mr. G decided to be 'green' and buy LED replacement bulbs, and replace the Halogen ones as they blew. I had no problem with this, until they were fitted. In order to see, in the room, we now have to have all the lights on, as the new bulbs are useless. They are so dim as to be a waste of money, and, they last no longer than the Halogen ones.

Today, Mr. G went to B & Q, and bought a box of 8 Halogen bulbs, as we had two blow this week, and he has just come home and replaced the blown ones. Both new bulbs blew, as soon as they were fitted. He fitted two more, and they blew! He then replaced one of the working LED bulbs with a Halogen and that blew!

He has tested the light units, and all are fine, no shorts. He has now turned all the lights off, to let everything cool down (himself included), and is replacing as required, and leaving off. So we'll see (or not!) later.

My only deduction from this, is that B & Q bulbs are sh*te. We have wasted £12.48 today on 8 bulbs, and so far, 6 have blown (he's just turned them on again, and the most recently replaced one blew). Tomorrow, B & Q will be getting the bl**dy things back!!!!!

So, do I buy new light units, or expensive bulbs from a reputable seller?

      Pay more

In our previous family house I counted just over 100 light bulbs in use...(I look back in dismay at our excesses back then)..obviously not all at the same time though
Needless to say at least 2 or 3 bulbs blew a week.
I gave up on the cheaper bulbs for the very reason you are experiencing

        Well done you...there wasn't a "parsnip" in there at all...anywhere .

I'd be tempted to buy new light units G4. There can't be something wrong with all those bulbs in one pkt surely?

          G4

im an electrician to trade and the first thing i would check is the neutral connections on the light fittings as sometimes a loose neutral connection can lead to lamps blown pre maturely

what i would say about lamps is that you definitely get what you pay for. i recommend PHILIPS or GE lamps
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand

Our kitchen (halogen) bulbs blow too. There's always 3 or 4 not working.

I got an eco LED bulb too - yes, it's so dim it might as well be a candle.

But what I do like is the colour-changing LED for fun in the utility room - it goes red, then blue, then green ...

Well, they were cheap bulbs, and I have heard the old 'ya gets wot ya pays for' used regarding bulbs...

They were cheap units when fitted, but have been checked. FiL is a retired sparks, and he sticks his probe in everything!

The LED versions readily available are 1W, and totally inadequate for anything more than 'walking around' (ie, seeing where yoiu are going). There are 3W versions, which should be equivalent to a 20W halogen (so the info I was looking up last week said), but they are a horrendous price!

But probably no dearer in the long run! I've lost count of how many of the darn cheapo things we've bought since we've been here.

We've had a light bulb related issue, but I won't bore you with it. Any hoo my dad works for GE and I rang him to see if he get hold of some bulbs for us. In conversation he mentioned that as you could no longer make old filament bulbs and that special offers were coming to an end for energy savers he expected the price of energy savers to rocket in the near future. So stock up whilst you can.
