  • Large circular bed designs

    Hi all

As some of you know myself and Big mal worked on my school garden at the weekend and discovered a very large circular bed already in situe.

How would you plant it? Spiral, cake slices, maze like, circles within circles......

We need to consider pathways for the kids and maintenance. I am going to give each child a dinner plate circular piece of paper on Friday and see what they come up with...!!

Anyone have experience of planting one up? Its quite large but I am no good with sizes Im afraid!

Feel free to move to the school bit, just thought more folks might see it here?!

Thankyou for your inspirtaion! All ideas will have to be passed by the committee!!

Any photos Donna? It would be really good to see the progress you're making!
Size matters with this - no point planning lots of segments if there's no room to access them.
Also what do your want to grow in it? Edibles, flowers, herbs....

Yin Yang style path through the middle? Or like cake sections/pie chart style could be good. Can you reach the middle from the edge? I assume not.

Can you measure it then Donna? Just to give it us an idea of how much space you have to plan. Everything is massive to me

It's roughly 7/8 yards in diameter

Right, I can picture it now - and its circular - not oval?

                    Yes, it's circular VC.

Like the plan, Mallly! Would the paths need to be wider than 18" for wheel barrows, or wheelchairs or any other access considerations?

Ignore the measurements VC, it's just a plan I found searching.

It fitted into your 7-8 yards estimate so I thought it was made to measure.
If you need to widen the paths though, you eat into the width of the beds, or the centre.
The central point would be good for a feature something or a circular stone seat maybe.

If you offset/rotate the middle circle by 45 degrees you'd create a more abstract, maze-like design!

A spiral garden is also fun, like a snail shell - and I do like mazes (big kid that I am) Or gardens that have a den in the middle, maybe made from willow..........
Don't know if this would help your planning, Donna http://www.edenproject.com/sites/def...ral-garden.pdf
