Default Isn't being sick rubbish?

Yesterday afternoon I started to feel a bit "odd", my stomach felt a little out of sorts, but I thought nothing of it. Anyway, didn't really improve, but didn't feel any worse by the end of the evening. LadyWayne got in late, so I ordered Chinese as I couldn't be bothered to cook. Went to bed only to wake up in the middle of the night not knowing what to do with myself. My question was soon answered. I haven't been physically sick for about 12 years, I'd forgotten how horrible it was.

Anyway, woke up this morning still feeling decidedly ropey and tired, came into work as I have too much on to take time off, what with an exhibition and a conference to organise next week, travelling to Germany the week after, then a weekend and Centre Parcs and another exhibition the week after that.

(I'll still make time for the vine of course!)

My thoughts are this: Being ill is a bit of a catch 22, people tell you to go home as they don't want to get ill themselves, yet if you do take time off you're seen as some kind hypochondriac. It's even worser for men, because everything is deemed "man flu" now. ie; not as bad as you make out, then you get told off by your wife for not going to the doctors (), when you get to the doctors all the magazines are for women!

I'm starting to feel a bit better now, although I feel kind of "bloated" with the occasional stomach cramp, and I ache all over, but nothing major.

Just wanted to get that off my stomach...

Awwww, poor you (NOT being said in a sarky way, I promise you!) In our house it's always me who has to plod on, even feeling ill. Jez takes time off to stay in bed if he's sick, but then always says he can't have time off for me being ill I think that's usually how it is once you have kids though - Mum's aren't often 'allowed' to be ill!

Take it steady Wayne, stick to very bland food for a day or 2, and not much of it

Oh dear HW - look after yourself. Take it easy for a few days, and watch what you eat/drink. Hope you're back on top form very soon

I had the very same sentiment about a month back, having not been sick for a few years. Had 'the bug' which came on very suddenly and had me up most of the night. Absolutely disgusting!!! Haven't eaten chilli con carne since (that was what I ate for dinner that night, but I think it was completely unrelated.)

Hope you're feeling back to your old self again soon. Make sure you take it easy!

Hope you feel better soon HW - I had that the other week too so I sympathise! Now I've got a stinking cold that I cannot shift! Hooray!

If you search for man flu on Youtube, there's a rather amusing sketch with a man who phones 999 because his gf won't attend to his man flu! Most amusing!

HW You are clearly lucky it wasnt the dreaded Man Flu or you would have been fortunate to escape with your life.
These women just dont know how lucky they are to escape with "bird flu," much gentler.
Take it easy and go and read some womens magazines whilst waiting in a doctors surgery full of equally diseased people.

Hope you feel better soon HW.

I think you can always tell when someone's genuinely ill and not putting it on ('Man Flu' for men or women) and in that case people respect it when you're not well.

From the fact that you've gone in as you're too busy (the kind of things I do and wonder why no-one wants to sit next to me that day ) I get the feeling everyone will realise you're genuinely ill honey

The docs thing, I agree onthat one, I never go to the docs as usually things pass after a couple of days and then I think I'll look like a fake who's wasting their time . But if something hangs around long enough it's best to go to the docs

Aaaaaalso if you're that bad and 'pushing through it' you'll probably make yourself feel worse and end up stuck in bed for longer than if you just went home today and relaxed

xx

Just eaten two of my three rolls (most unlike me) and my stomach keeps cramping - it quite hurts. Need to put a presentation together this afternoon for the MD - my bwoss, then I'll just sit here feeling sorry for myself.

I think people know me not to be a "man-flu-er" as I came into work for ages (about 3 months) whilst my back was bad and I could hardly walk. There was a "running" joke about how long it would take me to climb the stairs (1 flight). I think they had a sweepstake going.

Anyway, don't like to hark on...

Haywayne, stop eating for goodness sake, you'll just keep things the way they are.

Eat toast or something light, nothing to drink except water - you need to let your system flush itself through and get rid of what ever is causing the problem. If you keep eating you'll keep stoking it up and you're likely to end up talking to the big telephone again!

Edit: sorry, not meaning to sound unsympathetic but you need to be more proactive here - and if you had a couple of days off to recover, would it be the end of the world? If you go under the Clapham Omnibus this evening, bet you within 48 hours somebody else would be worrying about Germany, your presentations etc.

I've almost worked myself to death - quite literally - twice when I've been so ill I should have been hospitalised. OK, it's the man who pees himself in a dark suit thing, you get the nice warm feeling but nobody else can see what you're smiling at, sickness is just that, if the firm doesn't like it, that's not necessarily your problem, you need to get over this maladie and a couple of days away may be what you really need.

Unfortunately there is nobody else to do my job - I've been asking for an assistant for ages, been promised one "soon". I'm a one-man department.

Thanks for the advice regarding food Tony.

Yeah, that's how I feel. Really rubbish innit! My kidney area aches, the back of my neck aches - even my legs weirdly enough. I reckon a nice early night and plenty of sleep will sort me out!

Now you're aching Wayne it sounds like it could be 'real' flu ! Either that or you've strained your muscles when throwing up ( sounds nasty when you write that!). Go home & take it easy, go to bed with a hot water bottle & let Lady Heywayne make a fuss of you!
P.S. when's your article on conrete published, OH. doesn't get the mag. at work anymore so I'll rifle through a copy in W.H.Smith's!
