My late Grandad was a chiropodist so we always had him look after our feet. I've heard some horror stories about ingrown toenails. Clinic will sort you out for sure.

I have suffered with them for ages in the past.. In the end (after my 4th operation) it was sorted. My last operation was removing toe nails sticking out of the bottom of my toe - crazy. The length of the ingrown nail was the width of my toe nail. They trimmed and removed, then used a paste to kill the nailbed either side of my toenail - so it's kind of a slim toe nail now.

Wasn't painful, as a local anesthetic was used.. I watched too, felt a bit queesy when they started to prod my toe with a scalpel, but after going private (4th and final time) all was sorted.

It'll be fine! I used to dread taking my socks off, as my toes had bled, got infected then stuck to the sock, so when i pulled them off i'd pull a massive scab off, and then bleed for ages before I could stop it.

ETA: the operation doesn't hurt like.. The ingrown nails do ;p

Thanks guys, I'm lucky at the moment as there is no visible infection, no redness just discomfort. I guess the daily saltbaths may be helping keep any infection at bay.

Cut a V shape into the middle of the nail, that should releave some pressure. Nails should be cut straight across and never cut down the sides or the skin will grow over to compensate for the exposed area, then when the nail grows longer it is restricted and starts to grow into the skin giving you an ingrown nail
You have to loose sight of the shore sometimes to cross new oceans

I would be a perfectionist, but I dont have the time

I had 3 ops on my right big toe to deal with an ingrowing nail about 20 years ago. All were done under general anaesthetic. Before the ops I was in agony, one of the worst things I've known, constant nagging pain. Healed up well, the remaining nail looks a bit ragged but as long as I keep it trimmed it's fine.

May of 2009 I had an op, again under general, on my left big toe as it too had started ingrowing. Took it's time to heal, but that's down to advanced age & diabetes, everything takes a long time to heal now. But again, it's much better now and it just looks like a normal toe.

                My advice, get it done.

Just a quick update, it turned out to be a corn under my nail so after a bit of digging & gouging the corn is gone & I'm now pain free. I feel so much better. I didn't realise how depressed it was making me.

That's good to hear BM, glad you got it sorted. I know just what you mean, a nagging pain like that really can get you down.

Yes, I've had two ingrown toenails; both on my big toes.

I had the operation to have the right nail completely removed. This about 10 years ago and it now looks a bit odd, but it has healed and the skin is now rock solid.

I then developed one on the other big toe, but this one cleared up with treatment. The treatment was to simply soak it twice daily in salt water and then keep it covered with gauze. It cleared up after a few weeks.

                            The op didn't hurt, BTW.

My grandson had both his big toe nails removed last year and has had no problems since.
