  • If you're feeling down...

... look at this. The last pic made me cry, but it certainly puts my problems in perspective.

The short - but eventful - life of Ike - The Big Picture - Boston.com

My OH's brother lives in Florida, and we had Hurricane Wilma last time we were there. Nowhere near the destruction of Ike or Katrina but very very scary. We lost power for about 20 mins, apparently the last time that happened it was 3 days.

The day we drove back to Miami, the destruction was pretty bad [for us] - the roads were all out and there were no service stations open at all. Apparently they had only just opened the airport that afternoon, and we didn't even know it had been closed.

We knew it was going to be bad when they closed the local macdonalds. That made me smile, until the actual wind hit us.

Afterwards though - the air was so pure and fresh - we went to the beach as soon as the hurriance lifted and the surf was fab - loads of surfers taking advantage of the amazing waves.

I suppose that's the pay off for living there, good weather all year round but when it gets bad, it gets really bad.

I've been through one too many, meself, and would rather the incessant sprinklings of rain and cold in England! There is no pay off good enough to go through that (or the possibility of that) every single year. I say they should move those cities inland and commute all their gas and oil-refining work-force. Those hurricanes are only going to get bigger and faster and the seashore is just going to erode more and more. Notice that Ike and Katrina were H-U-G-E and not the compact little numbers that most of them have been. Also notice that the towns that were "wiped-out" were near coastlines that have been steadily eroding for decades. Maybe, if nothing else, the constant bang in the pocket book when it comes to rising insurance premiums, will make them move.

Sorry to sound bitter, but I am.

Well I am thankful that I don't live in the "Land of the Free".
The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.
