  • I think I'm spoilt...

Having finished helping a lottie neighbour to cope with a lettuce glut (well, somebody had to... ) and my own not being ready to cut-and-come-the-first-time, let alone again, I decided to buy some nice-looking organic Romaines from a supermarket.

I'm (supposed to be) having one for my lunch, but I think I'll bin it. Compared to what I've been eating, it's bitter, watery and generally awful.

I think I'm spoilt for supermarket goods, now...

I totally, agree! I gave some folk at my work some bags of salad leaves and they all commented that they never realised that lettuce was supposed to have a taste!

I have found that I really like vegetables after eating my own, the supermarket/ market does not have a patch on your own....Can't wait for my sweetcorn! QUICK RIPEN

Funny you should say that!I calculated how many onions to grow, on what we normally ate.Didnt take into account that my home grown ones were so tasty that we quadrupled the amount we ate and now have run out.Have been really surprised in the fabulous taste of things never before experienced

And you can't beat picking your own mixed salad leaves from the trough just outside the back door 1 minute before you eat.

That's so true, rustylady! I love meandering through the garden picking lettuces and spring onions and masses of different herbs, then tomatoes and basil from the conservatory. In fact the only thing that goes in it which has not been grown by me is an apple! No salad eaten out or bought from a supermarket ever tasted so good.

I find that one veg that always feels so different to shop bought ones is cabbage, it tastes so different too, I picked one in the rain this afternoon and just washing it was a pleasure, added to spuds, purple climbing french beans, onion, parsnip, carrot, garlic, and courgette all from the lottie and eaten with a roast organic chicken, dinner was pretty good tonight!

I have been pretty rubbish on the growing front this year, but do agree you can't beat your own (note to self - be MUCH more disciplined next year!)

I'm horribly spoilt when it comes to eggs. Supermarket eggs, even organic free range do not compare to the ones my ladies lay, and My friends/neighbours who buy surplus from me all say the same. When my ladies are off lay, I'd rather go without or will only buy eggs if I am really desperate or need them specifically.

That is the horrible thing about growing your own. There will come a time when you'll have to buy from somewhere else.

We try and buy from local people with huuuuuuuge polytunnels and gas heaters when stuff isn't in season. Not as good as your own obviously :-) but better than the supermarket.

When my chickens got killed I instantly thought - I am not going to have anymore eggs! Still waiting for my hens to lay :-(
