Try the supermarket basics range. For goodness sake don't try any suspect contacts - you may be paying less but you could be buying something really dangerous.

Not many sloes around in our part of Devon. We had some severe late frosts but hopefully the home brew shop will have some dried ones.

I used smart price asda gin last year for sloe gin - was fine for the job.
Not checked my usual source yet but last year the sloes were more like bunches of grapes they wer that big!

Thanks everyone, I was hoping for some prices to save me having to drive to Lidl/Aldi or where ever to check.

Tesco value gin is £6.56 for 70cl (but is it only 37.5 proof?)

Tesco Basics is fine. 37% is fine.
Plymouth Sloe Gin is only 26% proof and that is the mutt's nuts, that stuff: like alcoholic Benylin.

Many full price gins are 37% these days. When you're adding sugar and you consider the juice of the fruit that's leached out I wouldn't quibble over a few percent in the overall equation. I don't think I'd go down as far as 30% in some of the ultra-cheap ones though. I usually use the ASDA basic range for fruit spirits. Plum brandy is gorgeous if you can get hold of the small wild plums. And of course, if you grow damsons, I've done damson gin and damson vodka. Damsons never ruined anything but white satin in my opinion!

Yeah I'll use Tesco's if nothing else is cheaper - it'll be a few litres worth though which is why I wondered how much it cost at Lidl/Aldi/Morrisons etc...

Oh I'd love to make this, must go and hunt around. The source I had my eye on was cut down by some moronic idiot. The fact he owned the bush is besides the point! Didn't he realise my need?!?!? Gah!

I did buy some 'basics' vodka for a repeat prescription of Limoncello, yesterday, though. I'm going to a 'bring your own' wedding reception on Sat, so thought I'd do a proper job of it!

Lol! I'm safe then Flum, ain't got no satin! What's your plum brandy recipe then? Would sloe brandy be similar, I've never had wild plums?

I'll be walking past Aldi later, Manda - I'll look at the gin prices then.
