    Hydroponics

    Does anyone know of any distance learning courses in hydroponics? I've found a course run by Warwickshire College but I'm trying to find more options - don't really want a course run by a private company (don't know why, unless someone can recommend one). My tomatoes are being growing hydroponically this year and are doing amazing (which is just plain shocking), okay no tomatoes as yet but the plants look good and I'm doing my Christmas tatties, Christmas carrots and par-cel this way as well. But I'm not kidding myself that I know a lot cause I really don't, so I'm just looking for a basic course.

    I only found out about this by accident reading the readers digest in the docs! I think it very very very new concept over here so doubt if there are any courses yet run with public money by colleges etc. I think its Paignton zoo in Devon grow a lot of stuff this way, and they are running all kinds of experiments. Why not contact them? Can you post pics of what you are doing?

      The place I usually visit for info has been running for approx 15 years (could be more) and is in the middle of nowhere - Google Achiltibuie I've found only one course run by a college (I would not get funding so don't mind paying) but was hoping to find alternatives. I will post photos (if I remember) but my set up is not very exciting - some self watering planters out of Lidl and a couple of Auto Pot systems. My Christmas tatties (soon to be planted), carrots and par-cel are in pots (really, really big pots for the tatties), pots are in saucers to create a bodged flood and drain system.           I am looking a building a flood and drain set up for growing salad crops. Been put on the back burner for a day or two with a little un due very soon.

            What type of system are you using for the tomatoes eg. Run to waste?

            I have Hydroponics as one of my subjects in my Horticulture Course I'm currently doing and suggest it is worthwhile doing if you can get somewhere to suit with study.

            You can probably get some helpful info on techniques by downloading some e-books (Hydroponics For The Home Gardener, How to Hydroponics 4th edition) but they're certainly not a substitute for a course.
            I love growing tomatoes.
