  • How's this for a perfect way to your child's 5-a-day?

I used to have a pot full of Paris Market carrots.
I say used to, as this morning my son obliterated the lot of them.
Not in the terrible way that you might think, but by FURTLING and pulling them all up... then eating them!

This is his first experience of gardening, and he is 2.10.
He is so proud of growing his veg. He's watched the carrots grow from seed, through to seedlings to the one he first pulled out this morning.
He then could not help himself (and nor did I want to curb his enthusiasm) and he picked every single one!!

At the sink in the kitchen we washed them together and I tried to get a pic of him holding them in his hands but before i'd pressed the button on the camera he'd eaten them! "it's gone daddy, it's in my tummy!" he proudly boasted!

So here are some picks of my boy, and if you're lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of carrot!
My personal favourite is the last feral one which is like something from Lord of the Flies, personally an experience I think my son would rule over...

He's such a cutie Iamhanuman. Love the shades - great look. He's certainly got style.

And yes, that it is a great way to get children to eat their veggies.

    Keep up the good work.

              Awww!Bless him!
DS went through a phase of wearing goggles the whole time...apparently it was a Sporticus thing!...He's now taken to wearing his sisters hairbands around his wrist...apparently gives him Power Ranger Super powers!!
(Thankfully the wearing one glove thing didn't last so long...apparently that was a Spiderman thing, but looked a little too Jacko for my liking!
Pleased your growing things together is going so well....makes it all so worthwhile when they appreciate the end results!
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Great photos Iamhanuman! What a star.
Reading your post I had a sudden glimpse into the future, with your son relating his fond memories of his first growing, harvesting and eating memories from his childhood - probably on a similar forum/blog while giving sound advice on carrot growing!!
Life is too short for drama & petty things!

that is an absolutely lovely thing Comfreyfan (all the messages have been) and i'm just sitting here now with the sounds of an insomniac son in his bedroom down the hall trying his best to go to sleep, and that just touched me. i totally get the future glimpse thing and just relayed that to my darling wife, who is sitting with me here.

                  wonderful - thank you!!!!

That's so true, Comfreyfan and you paint a lovely picture.

Iamhanuman, this thread brought me memories too, of my children when they were small picking strawberries for breakfast.

Also, they used to pick peas, shell them and eat them raw, I never had to cook them.

Much bigger things......The next Monty Don in the making methinks! I mean, look at the shades...what style this boy has in spades (bad pun, I know)

Raw carrots are better than cooked ones any day, and fresh from the ground are even better!

There is a lovely quote that i used to have on the wall of the Nursery:
'Children are the messages we send to a world we will never see'
Basically how we bring up our children and the way we teach them, the moral code we instill them with, the values we give them, will impact on the way the World is going to be.
By taking all this time to show your little lad the joy of gardening and allowing him to explore it in his own way will stay with him for the rest of his life and when he is older i have no doubt he will pass on that love of nature and the joy to be found in simple pleasures to his children. What a lovely positive message you are sending to the future.
P.S You little un looks a character, no wonder you are so proud.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

Miffy you have just brought some extra sunshine to our day! we are all a bit unwell at the moment and it is lovely to see that kind of comment. i totally agree about the message for the future.
I am just hoping he keeps an interest. I am sure he will to some degree as I have no plan on stopping! he is so proud to call himself a gardener, and everything he carries then becomes his gardener's hat, his gardener's water bottle, his gardener's pants!!
"Gardeners wear pants, don't they daddy?"
                            "Yes they do Alex!"
