  • How to deal with incompetent bankers

They deprived them of more than just their bonuses in the good old days: the following is from the Anglo-Saxon chronicles for 1124, translated by G.N.Garmondsway.
In this year before Christmas king Henry sent from Normandy to England and gave instructions that all moneyers who were in England should be deprived of their members, namely the right hand of each and their testicles below: the reason for this was that anyone who had a pound found it would not buy a penn'orth in a market. Bishop Roger of Salisbury sent all over England, and commanded them all to assemble at Winchester by Christmas. When they came thither they were then taken one by one, and each deprived of the right hand and the testicles below. All this was done in the twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany, and was entirely justified because they had ruined the whole country by the magnitude of their fraud which they paid for to the full.

Now that's my kind of punishment. Has anyone noticed that banker rhymes with...oh is that the time?

Joking by the way, any bankers on here!

I think you will find that it was more to do with the fact that they were Jews than Bankers.

In those times the church forbade Christians to charge intrest Usery it was caled. The only people that could were non Christians.

Read old will shakespears "The Jew of Venice" they have lately changed the title to the "Merchant of Venice".

But getting back to bankers I think they should take 50% at random and shoot them then open the Tin mines and make the other 50% work down there.....It worked for Stalin.

I wonder whether 'moneyer' actually meant a manufacturer of coins (rather than a lender), and the penalty was because they were making coins from cheap metal instead of the proper stuff?
I don't know whether there WERE banks as we know them (or even recogniseably close) that long ago.

From Leviticus it would appear that Jews are forbidden to charge interest to other Jews, and it would seem likely that a similar ruling applied in the Christian faith.

Right on, Hilary B, a moneyer was a minter - a person authorised to mint coins. The piece is very fitting I think - ref the part about someone having a pound and finding it will only buy a pennyworth...

Btw, when I say fitting, I'm not referring to the proposed punishment!

Oups and were all killed because the Christians didn't want to pay them back the money they owed them.

We want to know... if they are encouraging failed bankers to retrain as teachers in six months can we all go retrain as bankers in the same time period? We can't do any worse than they have and we'll all enjoy the rest.
