  • Help Needed From Yorkshire Grapes

As usual, I have problems with the logistics of travelling around.
In this case, come the 11th of April, I am going on holiday to first of all Scarborough, and then Skegness. I am getting a lift as far as Wetherby, or more likely Knaresborough, from where I and my (incredibly cute and well behaved) golden labrador will hopefully manage to catch a bus or train to either York or Scarborough for the night. (I really fancy seeing York. Always been one of my must-see places, and I'm not likely to get another chance.)
What I'm wondering is, does any Grape thereabouts know any websites or services that could help me plan the travelling, or perhaps of any dog-friendly places to stay in York ?
I'm trying to keep weight of luggage to a minimum, I've got a bit of a back problem at the moment, so I was hoping not to have to camp.
And of course you are all invited to a garden-digging party in a little wildlife oasis near Skegness, where I have undertaken to start a new veggie garden for a friend...

If you search here Snohare, you can specify 'Pets allowed' and also narrow down to hostels or B&Bs. Sorry can't be much more help than that, I rarely go to York.

Bugger..........If I hadn't been working, I would have picked you up in Wetherby and taken you to York. Would have been nice to put a face to a name.
P.S..........I agree, you can't come all this way without seeing York. Wish I had known earlier, I would have booked the day off.

This hostel looks promising - pets free by arrangement, really near the station, and not hugely expensive: Ace York budget hostel York cheap accommodation

          Wow, that was quick !
Thanks Sarz, superefficient as usual, that is exactly the sort of accomodation I was thinking of. Independent hostel was my preferred option.
Now, if anyone knows about trains or local bus services that will take dogs - I think most of the country buses will, it's just the longer distance Citylinks that don't - I will be sorted. Shame we can't meet up BM, but I only found out this weekend that my parents were going on holiday, as soon as I heard they were going to Hull that determined what I was doing - instant mad scramble !
I'll be back up to York for the train about the 18th I daresay though... I think there is enough archaeology there to keep me interested for a long time. Any suggestions for good museums or science/history/gardening oriented visitor attractions ?

Hrer you go Sno. What time do you think you will get to Wetherby if in fact that's where you are going.

Thanks again, BM. There's so many attractions there, I may decide to just camp and get a two day pass ! (Although I found a very nice B&B that takes dogs, and has a cheap room free at present - sadly the hostel would have needed me to book a single room because of the dog.)
We're leaving at 0830, and the RAC routeplanner suggested 5 hours plus to get to Wetherby - but of course we would be taking breaks en route. So I'm assuming mid or late afternoon, hopefully in enough time to arrive in York with daylight left. Coming back, heavens knows - finding out the cheapest train back to Aberdeen is not meant to be easy !

This looks good. £37.50 with a 15 min change @ Edinburgh. Or £47.50 straight through from York to Aberdeen

Wow, I didn't even have time to say that I have been known to spend hours in Edinburgh (I have many friends there) and already you have saved me almost £30 ! You really know how to make an Aberdonian happy... Thank you.

Thanks - now comes the hard bit - making sure there is no small print that says, "No dogs allowed on this train" !
Seriously folks, thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

There is nothing here regarding animals but there is an email address at the bottom. Good luck Sno.
