  • Help - I need an alibi or cover story

I'm a keen amateur photographer and I saw a very special lens for my camera on offer.

Before I knew it, my card was out and I was leaving the shop very happy but feeling guilty about the purchase.

Now, how do I tell the OH?

Do I say, "What this old thing - no, I've had it for years, you've seen it before, I took that picture of Uncle Charlie with it at the wedding in 2002, don't you remember"

or do I simply come clean and offer to take it back?

or do I simply offer wine, chocolates and Jimmy Choo shoes?

I'm pretty sure I've fallen for the "You've seen these before" answer when I've suddenly noticed, (I thought), a new pair of shoes or a new (to me) dress

Do I come clean, tell a lie or take her shopping in return?

Will I ever be able to use the lens without feeling guilty?

"I only bought the lens because I thought the world was going to be swallowed up by a black hole from Cern today"........(worth a try perhaps?)

Is there an Anniversary coming up soon?
Perhaps you can say that you've bought your present from her - and as you'd rather not surprise her with HER perfect gift ..you'd decided to take a day off work ( her choice of day) and you'd spend the whole day out shopping with her - looking for her gift - and have a nice lunch out into the bargain)

        She'll think you're a real romantic

....how much do you want to keep that lens?????

If there isn't one coming up....

You could tell her you bought your lens in a moment of madness and if she would like to have a mad moment of her own that was OK by you.

Nicos - that sounds good! - I like the romantic aspect to the plot... :-)

andi&di - that works too! - I do some work for a dog rescue charity when time permits so there is a link there already...... :-)

That sounds potentially dangerous and expensive as she has a colour co-ordinated wardrobe - so several items have to be bought at once (so she tells me). All items have to mix and match for variety.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll bear it in mind for now and mull it over.

It may be the only solution eventually of course.....

You could always do what KK (Hubby) does and blame me for not being there to stop him

Just chuck it in your camera bag and leave it for a week or two. From experience I know that one piece of photographic equipment looks pretty much like another to the uninitiated. Then take it out and use it nonchalantly and you'll probably never even be questioned. This method WORKS, if it didn't I'd still be using a box brownie.

Nah... come clean. Just say you wanted it, needed it, bought it. There has to be special dispensation for some things, and you will of course be at pains to explain that to your wife, as she hurtles towards LK Bennett on a mission. You're really chuffed with it, so she'll enjoy you being happy with it. Just as you will share her joy at a lovely new handbag and matchy matchy shoes!!!

I do admire your wife's thorough approach to shopping for clothes. A woman after my own heart...

My weakness is buying fabric for my quilts. Fortunately Hinmself is not a person who notices fabric! Will she notice a lens?

If you are convinced she will, I think you need to come clean. It was too good an offer to miss. You will treat her to something to the value of £xx (doesn't need to be the same amount, does it ) to keep things fair.

Best of luck, whatever you do!

...though this approach is also pretty foolproof... deffo works for anything my DH nonchalantly produces that's for a mountain bike or something. I love nice perfumes and OCCASIONALLY have been known to pull the "this old thing..." stunt.

But then you miss the joy of going "look look at my sparkly new purchase!!!" with a shopped-out grin on your face.

Ah, the seasoned voice of experience bluemoon. Will my nerves take it or will I spill the beans and have an easy conscience?

I wonder if the OH agonises like this over the shoes "she's had for ages" and because I'm a man, I haven't noticed
