  • Hairy Bakers last night

Whilst the cake in it's entirety wasn't really to my liking, how cool was the VW splitty on the top!?

    What would Vedder do?

My OH was on the phone to his Bro last night chatting about the Kick Boxing Championships that they are competing in next month in Italy. They were discussing tactics, coaching, etc (yawn) then I heard then launch into an indepth discussion about the decorating techniques the Hairy Bakers were employing, geez!

I liked the big chocolate one they were making a mess of. I would have been happy to eat the evidence.

Great show and the bride and groom loved it. Fond teenage memories of those camper vans.......

Main thing I couldn't get my head around was why they put about 3" of marzipan on it, always roll mine as thin as possible or it takes over the lovely fruity cake taste.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I loved the look of all the cakes, but like you happybunny, I don't like fruit cakes!! It's chocolate cake or madeira all the way for me!

We're having our Civil Ceremony early next year, and I'm hoping to make our own cake....with money being tight and all!!! Thing is, I've never baked in my nelly puff...so I'll have to learn quickly!

Hairy bikers gave me some serious inspiration though! I'd be happy with the little kids castle he made - have a feeling mine might look something like that!
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

Wedding cake was brilliant, the camper van was cool.
But like Bephlam and happybunny I don`t like fruit cake ether. Shame it didn`t have one tier made out of chocolate cake.

See if your local college has a cake decorating course! A friend of mine has done one and her cakes are so magnificent now that she has started up her own business! She made a cake for youngest daughters 5th birthday last week that was staggeringly good - I'll post a picture if I can work out how...

Oooh, can I have everybody's slice of fruit cake? I love it! (Especially if it's been doused in alcohol - just to help it to keep, you understand!)

The only limit to cake decoration is your imagination, and the agility of your fingers.....
My Mum did a police-helmet cake (baked in a pudding basin to get the shape) complete with white icing 'badge' on the front.
I've made a mini-car (pre BMW type) with licorice wheels, mint-imperial headlights and midget-gum indicators and rear lights.
I did an 'easter bonnet' with assorted flowers (dead simple, apart from some of the flowers).
All the above were victoria sponge type.
My nephew got married a couple of years back now, and the wedding cake they had was simply a mound of chocolate mini-swiss-rolls, chocolate truffles, and assorted other chocolatey treats, all stuck together with.... more chocolate.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
