  • Grey Water hand pump / syphon

Hi all, I would like to know how to make a pump thing to get my water out the bath and into a tub / water butt, only has to go out the window, im just thinking it could be a good idea, kids have no bubbles in the bath and they're only in it 5 mins.

shall i make one or buy one for £19.99???

the length is not the problem once the syphon is in action it is self powering. You just need to start it.

Buy a hose and a simple hand pump syphon pump and you are away.

for short lengths of hose, just sink the whole thing under water so the bubbles all blow out. Keep your thumb on one end and use the other end to siphon off.
Or, close off one end with your thumb and fill the other from the tap, and siphon off. No sucking required.

your pond needs to be higher than what you're emptying into though

I agree with the siphon idea. Very easy and you just need a long length of pipe. Use a weight to keep the end in the bath under water.

Alternativly (and for emptying ponds etc) you could go for a drill powered pump. These attach to a power drill and turn a simple small centrifugal pump. Just type drill pump into ebay.

If you get enough pipe waterfilled to reach out of the window and down below water level in the bath, that will do it. It doesn't actually have to fill the whole pipe in order to syphon. If you can find semi-clear hose (I know I've seen some in a shop somewhere, but can't remember where) you will be able to see how much hose has water in.....

If you can find a one-way valve to fit the hose, put it on the bath end (in only) that would make part-filling the hose easier (that is what the thing on e-bay does)
