Default Green backlash?

For a while now I've been taken my own re-usable bags to the fruit and veg stall at the market. Today I bought some bananas and passed the vendor my bag. She ignored me and put them in their plastic bag. I said I don't need a bag. She started to lecture me about putting the people who make plastic bags out of work, and do I use a plastic bag in my bin? She refused to use my bag and I had to take the bananas out of the plastic bag and put them in my bag myself, with her getting more and more annoyed, blaming Tony Blair and ranting on and on. I was really shocked, needless to say I will not be using her stall again.

Anyone else experienced a green backlash?

"putting the people that make plastic bags out of business" - that's the best I've heard so far.

Does she throw litter on the floor to keep roadsweepers in employment?

What about all the people who make paper bags? Was she there back in the day when "plastic bag people" started making life difficult for "paper bag people"

Bless her.

I would be tempted to pass her stall in future and tell her why you are going elsewhere.

Mad woman!

Their is another fruit and veg stall a few stalls down from them, so she'll see me there, with my re-usable bags from now on.

Oh deary, deary me. Sadly I can believe it. I was recently called an 'eco-fascist' as I was taking the grass cuttings from my small lawn to my lottie to add to the compost and offered to take a neighbour's with me in order to save them from being dumped over the wall into the local woods (complete with black bin-bag.) Don't these people want a planet for their kids and grandkids that's fit to live on?

I was recently walking past a chap cutting the grass outside some offices, and stopped and asked him if I could have the clippings for my chooks. He looked at me as if I was barking, but gladly handed them over saying it saved him the bother of dumping them.
Can't believe the front of that woman, cheeky mare.

Unbelievable!!!

I get the mickey taken out of me at work quite regularly for taking all my fruit peelings etc home for the compost. My friend's OH refuses to have a compost heap in the ONE ACRE garden, arguing that it 'will attract rats'. So, I'll join you as an Eco-fascist, BM!

Has anyone else been cheeky enough to put all their fruit loose in the trolley, when shopping? Worth it for the amusement of seeing the cashier trying to keep runaway oranges on the scanner/weighing platform. Tee hee hee!

We always buy our fruit/veg that way. Always makes me laugh/cry seeing people put things like bananas or onions into a plastic bag.

Tracey, I've had an idea.

Go back to your fruit/veg stall lady and buy 3lb of grapes, but insist that each grape is given it's own bag and tell her you're doing your bit for "the plastic bag people", then ask her which mental institution she's on day release from.

I do. They've not complained, but who knows what they're secretly thinking.

The stall holder at the market has been filling my re-usable bags for quite a while now, her annoyance must have gradually been building up. Shame it happened to day though as I had my 11 year old with me.

I only sell my veg in block paper bags - the kind of paper bag you see in American TV series when folk come out with armfuls of shopping. My bags are made from recycled paper of course. Most of my customers now actually bring a varied assortment of canvas or woven "bag for life" with them, in which case the only veg that goes into a paper bag is freshly lifted potatoes or other root crop with the ground still firmly attached.
Must admit, I like HW's suggestion too

I collect all the left over salad, fruit peel etc when they have a buffet lunch at the office where I clean in the evening. I also check the bins and take all the banana skins, apple cores etc. They probably think that we eat them because they do give us some very funny looks.

I find it unbelievable too! I like the idea Sluglobber. I will try it next time I'm shopping.

Years ago when we only got three boats a week and produce was not too fresh even buying it on the day the boat got in, my friend used to strip the wasted leaves off a cabbage, throw them back in the box and then go and get it weighed. I always wished I'd had her bravado, but perhaps I could manage without putting my fruit in a bag (now I'm older and a bit braver )

I get funny looks from both the "market stall" and the local greengrocer when I decline the plastic bag and insist on my own - the shopping trolley seems to be less offensive. I shall continue though.

Hmmmm eco-fascist - now there's a label I could live with.

No not yet but I'm really glad you're not put off and are voting with your feet.

I was always subject to ridicule, mostly friendly, about my recycling and small enterprise inclinations.

Noo, but will in future

I've been toying for a while with the idea of aquiring small string bags for the purpose.

Mops up tea from computer screen

Wow that's really different to our local fruit an veg stall who graetfully take back the trays when you go back to buy more and appreciate people using their own bags. It might be just a money saving thing for them, I don't know but wow... that's an odd reaction and a half you get there!
