  • The great HeyWayne's Workplace Chilli Off

In a similar vein to the chilli growing competition here (is it still going?), I thought I'd start something similar at the office.

I had a few spare chilli plants (well, 6-7 inch tall seedlings), so in conversation with our accounts department decided I'd give each of them a plant and they have to nurture and care for it, then whoever grows the most chillis (it's Purple Tiger, so no point growing the longest/biggest) wins.

Prize is yet to be decided and deadline yet to be set - but I'm already thinking of starting a company-wide competition next year - just need to grow lots of chilli plants.

Morale is quite low here - it may be something to galvanise and get a bit of spirit back into the place.

    Good idea

You can then have a "who can eat the most chillies" contest.

you could have a bit of fun with the competition by saying things like "it'll grow better if you only water it with Evian" or "feed it with coffee dregs/urine/Stella".

Good idea Wayne, a bit of friendly rivalry, and gives everyone something else to talk about. And re-homes some extra chilli plants at the same time
          Hope it goes well

oh, and to someone you can have a laugh with ... give them a weed plant, not a chilli. Or possibly a hemp plant for your boss to nurture?

Great idea. I will join in 'virtually' as my chili plants are titchy.
Any tips to get them growing and fruiting would be very welcome.

I have raked the soil and planted the seeds
Now I've joined the army that fights the weeds.

Me too, me too please - my chilli plants are short on vegetation, high on aspiration.

There's only three of them, and already it's getting quite competitive!

One of them has a greenhouse, one has asked how best to grow, does it need re-potting etc.

                        This could get quite interesting!

Maybe next year you could give out seeds and they could start from scratch?

Hi All, I did this at my workplace this year. It's my first year growing anything, and I was boring the pants off everyone, so I thought I'd try and "spread the addiction" and it's worked! I've also sent sunflower seeds to all the kids in our family (spread our throughout Scotland) and they have to text or email updates as to how they are getting on! "The Laughing Garden" (our houses fun name!) will be keeping tabs and sending updates back!
