Nowadays we just use numbers the above would be my 4x great grandfather or my father's 3x great grandfather - if written they become 3xggfather etc..

Shen's post in the new word thread remineded me of a debate I had with my sister about when to use the prefixes great and grand.

With direct lines of descent my mother's mother is my grand mother and her mother is my great grand mother - no problems there,

However my mothers sister is my aunt and my sister says my grand mother's sister is my great aunt. My brain tells me that logically she is my grand aunt.

    Any thoughts?

When I was a tot I used to have a Great Aunt Clara and Great Aunt Eva - they were my Grandmother's sisters. Sadly, I am now a Great Auntie Clare so I guess Great is the word for me.
Great Grandmother for me sort of makes the Grand bigger (or older in this case) if you can follow my inane ramblings

Not inane at all missus . The great grandmother bit is generation above grandmother yet great aunt is the same generation as grandmother. makes no sense to me at all . ermhh excuse my inane ramblings
