Default gardening magazines.. when do they take the pics?

This is somehting that has puzzled me for a while (yes I know I need to get out more).

When you get a gardenign magazine, they are always about a month ahead of what the date is, is May mags are out and it's only just april.

So when they go to print it must be even earlier.

So when you see all the pics of things they muct be last year's pics as the veg and flowers and stuff otherwise would be not as advanced. Or when you see someone making something in bright sunshine or doing the jobs that need doing that month eg and it's been cold and wet and snowy, are they doing it really early or is there some kind of time delay for garden magazines?!

Any suggestions (paul??)

They make it easier for themselves by printing a lot of pictures which aren't actually of what they are supposed to be - ask Flum, she's been spotting loads!

Most of the general plant pictures will come from a stock or library, millions of pictures on all subjects.

Other more specific pictures such as Paul with water Butt, Paul with spade, Paul looking at weeds, i'm sure would be taken all the time for GYO's own library.

Lots of pictures taken, few used, rest saved for future features.

Can't speak for gardening magazines, but working in the industry myself, we choose pics way in advance - and yes, sometimes they might be from the year before for instructional features and such. News photos are a different thing as they need to be current.

I think they're chosen from an archive by someone who doesn't always know what they're looking for! It they were taken specifically for the mag the previous year they'd be more accurate.

Was it just me or were there some radishes masquerading as turnips in the latest issue?

But why are magazines dated May when they are available in April?
That is what puzzled me.

Ok, don't tell anyone, but.... I wait for a sunny day to do my photos, then dress appropriately for the 'on sale' month - which means I'm doing the June issue in a T-shirt in earl April... Brrrrr.

As most of mine are practical shots (Paul drilling, Paul sawing etc) the seasonality of plants isn't so relevant. More tricky for other contributors though! Taking photos at every opportunity means I have a decent library to choose from if needs be.
