  • feeling really wobbly.

Told the staff at my school today that i had been asked to go on a secondment and that the county needed me to do it asap which meant this was my last week. Our school is closing in March and my post is the only one that won't be covered. There was a stunned silence, three staff were lovely, hugs etc. One ran off crying and the other one said to the staff she thought i was dispicable leaving before the school closed! The thing that really hurt was the Nursery teacher saying to me, they wouldn't make a big thing of my going because after all the children didn't really know who i was!! I am a hands on head, say hello and goodbye to all the children and parents every day, i deal with the parents, run the school, mop up sick!, deal with the awful stuff like child protection issues , special needs etc.. That comment hurt.
I don't know how i am going to get through the week, glad to have new opportunities but so very sad to leave somewhere i have put my heart and soul in for the last four years. Trying not to cry as i write this, now i am starting to. sorry got to go

Rise above it mate . I work in a school as well (ok I'm a grounds man - your the head ) but we both know how some members of staff can be . In this time of recession you have got to put yourself first . If you don't find a way to pay your morgage I'd be suprised if any of the rest of your staff would pay it for you.
    Good luck with your future.

I work as a clerk to schools. The head teacher is the heart and soul of a school, and can make or break it. Dont let one persons reaction get to you, big hugs

That seemed like a pretty heartless reaction from the Nursery teacher. Sorry if I'm out of line, but all I could think on reading that is 'cheeky cow'.
I agree the headteacher is what keeps a school together, my daughter's previous head was absolutely fantastic now retired), and the current acting head is too (I would like to see her in the post permanently)
Its such a shame your school is closing, but I hope your secondment is a nice one. Good luck

That was not a very nice thing to say to you, as a parent who has been involved with primary schools for years you sound like a fantastic head. The school my sons went to had a fantastic head until he moved I didnt like the replacement, the school went from having a head who knew every childs name and every parents christian name who said hello and went out of his way to speak to parents most afternoons in the playground, to one who would pass by and not say a word. When my daughter started school we chose another school distance between the two is about the same, The head was great to start with but by the time my daughter left, the school had gone down, no respect from the parents for him, dicipline was almost non existant he didnt like confrontation even on a freindly basis, the term before she left he went part time, he is retiring in the summer. That can only be a good thing for the school. I was glad that I didnt have any younger children because no way would they have attended that school. A school is as good as the head and or the teaching staff and I think the majority do a fantastic job.
Good luck with your new job.

I agree, the nursery teacher was insensitive, to both you AND the children. Perhaps she missed the cognitive psychology bit of her training, as kids are more aware than she seems to think. I still have memories from when I was 2yrs old, remembering more than my Mum does about my nursery! I'm nearly 32, now!

Best wishes for your final week and beyond. I left a job last year after 5 years there and I still miss it desperately, so it must be a terrible wrench for you.

I have to say - and apologies becasue I know it doesn't apply to all - I have known a nursery teacher like that. It seemed to be a case of wanting to be queen of her own little world and she resentd the head even coming into the nursery. (Being a brilliant head, of course, that didn't stop her!)

I was admin officer to a school that closed and I know what it's like from the inside. You can be sure that the parents will appreictae you even if the odd (very odd!) staff member doesn't. It's up to you to put our the information ASAP to parents and give the right story - I suspect Mrs Nursery will not do that!

I'd have loved to work for someone like you and I'm sure the rest of your staff are sorry to see you go but understand the circumstances. Good luck with a stressful week and I hope your secondment is fulfilling and enjoyable.

Oh Miffy you poor thing. Congratulations on your new post, fresh start and new opportunities for you. I used to work in a school and find that there is always two camps either for or against any Head Teacher, you are lucky in that nearly all the staff have been positive to you, the nasty one will just have to get over herself!

I am so sorry you have had to put up with such a stupid remark from a member of YOUR staff in YOUR school!!!

and who the devil is she to decide how much should be made of you leaving? perhaps she should ask the kids what THEY want to do?

good luck at your new post.
