  • feeling quite pleased with myself for a change

It's no secret I borrow my nan's garden and grow stuff. However one of her neighbours has 3 large dogs that get across to nanna's as the neighbour has let the fence fall in to complete disrepair. Nan has asked them countless times over the past 20 years to do something about it. They have always said they will but have done nothing. It worries her as the weeds come through and also she doesn't want their dog mess in her garden. I pick it up and fling it back over the fence. And their weeds. I also contacted environmental health last year and they came and visited and made them remove over 50 bin bags of refuse piled up in the garden which none of them could be bothered to put out for the bin men each week. It was totally disgusting and these are so called professional people, the mum is a teacher and one of the sons is unemployed and is home all day so no excuse not to do anything about it or walk the dogs.

I politely knocked on their door about 4 weeks ago and the owners and me had a nice little chat about their responsibilities as dog owners, trespass of the dogs, their legal duty to maintain their boundaries etc. I was very polite and not aggressive but the lady ran at me with her arms flapping and accused me of threatening her! We agreed that by the end of half term they would put up a proper boundary to stop the dogs. I then wrote a letter to them outlining what they had agreed to do..... and had honestly thought it would be of no use.

BUT this weekend there has been action!!! They have removed the old bits of falling down fence and the posts and the old spiky chicken wire and rubbish and have been measuring up - HOPEFULLY to put a new one up.
Maybe I will finally be able to bring my children there to help and play there without the risk of them hurting themselves on the wires, or falling into dog poo.

I think they thought they could bully my nan and fob her off with excuses (90 next week) but they can't bully me. And I won't let it go til they have done it.

Thats excellent news Jane - and well done for standing up to them in a non aggressive way. Sometimes being assertive works. Hope they follow through with sorting it all out for you and your poor nan.
      Best of luck!

I am, at this moment, pinning a theoretical medal of valour to your puffed out chest! I bet your Gran is proud of you too.

Wot she said, and anyway no responsible owner would want their dogs wandering off. (Iknow I wouldn't)

Good for you Janey - and sometimes it just takes a catalyst to get some positive things happening. If the neighbours can see it that way, even better. Make sure you and your Nan over-praise them - if they do even a half way decent job.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
