  • Family Tree Search

Well it is WAY off topic!

I am trying to trace some family members who are of more 'recent' birth but proving difficult to locate.

I have access to an electoral roll from 2005 but the person I am looking for is not on there. After 2000 people could opt to not be included on the general 'for sale' one. I cannot find a death record for her or either of her parents on the Eng/Wal/Scot registers - nor a marriage record for my target.

Does anyone have access to the (pre?)2000 electoral roll which may have come with some old genealogy software way back? And who would be willing to do a lookup for me - through PM only of course - for specifics.

I have the dob and marriage details of my target's parents. The address where they were living when they evidently adopted her - but there the trail grows cold. Possibly with the target and family emigrating in the mid-1950s?

I have so far assumed that not finding a death record for my target 'may' be a good thing - however it is most unlikely that her parents are still alive with dob's of c1901 & c1905 respectively. There is also no marriage record for the target subject in Scot/Eng/Wal. My target was born, for sure, in 1934.

Does anyone have any suggestions or a course of least possible cost whereby I might locate this person. Still believed to be alive - perhaps still living in Scotland.

I don't think it would be beyond the realms of the moderators to say that the family names involved are as follows....

    Scottish Side
Turnbull, Brown, Dickson, Mcleod (later Lymer, Morris), Lymer (kosb)

Cannot trace Lymer births on Scottish records....Eng/Wal?....maybe Irish? But military connections via male line. Believed to have served after WW1 and died 1920 - possibly Mesopotamia - Basra memorial? KOSB - 2nd battallion?

Should anyone here have these names in their trees - from around 1870-1945-ish I would be very grateful to hear from you. Also anyone able to do a lookup - you're input would be most welcome.

    Thank You.

yes, yes and sort-of yes. b4usearch came upon trouble in 2000-1 when new legislation came in re-electoral roll drop out - threatened with lawsuits etc.

Actualy friendsreunited gave me some hope when I contacted a lady who now lives in Australia - a little younger than my target - but who remembers someone with the same surname - not necessarily related - done through address - rather than school. Relies on voluntary info however.

thks for reply - much appreciated.

Have you looked at the military websites - there are some service records which are public domain and you might find your relative there. If they died abroad in service there is also the Commonwealth War Graves website which lists memorials.

Unfortunately Irish records can be really tricky - without actually going to the place where the records were created. You would be best advised to contact an office over there and ask them to put you in touch with a researcher.

As for electoral roles - do you have a local history centre? They usually have electoral roles on microfiche and you can search through them - I'm pretty certain that these are the 'long' list rather than the commerically available ones. I opted out of the one that is sold on and I'm sure I still feature on the one in the record office...

If you're really stuck, we have one close at hand in Worcester - if you PM me with a few details of who you're looking for I'll take a look and see what I can find out. I'm going into the city tomorrow if that's any help?

Oh, and have you tried the really obvious one of a search on the BT phone book? Sounds silly, but it's how we found one long, lost...

Just win the lottery Quark, they'll all find YOU then Try your local library they may have access to census returns. I have a similar problem with some of mine but they were on the canals and so were never around at Census time. Your man may be in the Navy (either royal or merchant) and so would be elsewhere when the Census came about - another place to try.

I must admit I have never tried to trace Scottish ancestors so not sure how you'd go on.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter - day Saints ( Mormons ) hold millions of records up to the present day, this maybe the best place to concentrate your search.

Check out (Family Search .org )for a Temple near you and see if they have a record center at that Temple, if they have you can ring for an appointment to view their records and ask for advice.
I have used them in the past and found them very friendly and most helpful.

Lots of luck with your research, fingers crossed that you dont have to go into Irish records.

Thanks two sheds for flagging up freebmd - I've used before but its an evolving project and I've uncovered a few more branches - but from turn of century! They've obviously filled in a few more entries.

Thanks also to others who have made suggestions and offers of help - some I've seen before and tried out, to no avail, but the offers of practical help are much appreciated in this very busy world we live in today. You know who you are and I'm very thankful.

Mmmh! I don't have to trace my mother's ancestry as already knew it in theory, but it has been followed up and published by two cousins.

My dad's family has been confused by my daughter getting his name and birthday wrong on databases. I refuse to pay to join them to put her stuff right, and she doesn't understand why it might be important to other family members looking as it's "only a year out". Trouble is the mis-spelling of his name. How else would anyone spell "Kenneth"? An "I" makes a lot of difference in a search engine.
