  • fab holiday but garden has suffered

We had a fab time in Spain, it was sooooo nice and prob the only place I have ever been that I would go back to or buy somewhere there too.

However we returned to extreme humidy here and now we all feel ill lol. It was hot where we were but dry too, so much nicer!

Mum has been doing her best with the garden but it's not been good. The outside toms had all wilted, but have perked up again now, the peach tree had lost 20 peaches, only about 10 left on it.
Lots of salad leaves had bolted.
Some of the toms in the greenhouse had fallen over and lots of branches snapped off, looks like my dad's fat bum couldn't fit through the gaps to water.

The deer have bitten holes in the chain mesh fence and eaten most of the peas, broadies and the flowers off the beans. And ALL the lettuces. And the parsnip leaves.

In the brassica bed (covered with netting), 4 brocolis had bolted, 2 caulis had just stared to blow. Mum said she didn't like to cut them and eat them (she'd rather they were wasted??!!) The lettuce had bolted in there too.

My little boys bucket of white carrots have gone to seed and have no carrots in the bottom? No idea what went on there.

The chickens ESCAPED and were chased by a huge stray cat. The man next door has had to do emergency repairs to the bit of fencing they had prised up. Luckily he managed to catch them all.

At nanna's I found 9 marrow sized courgettes, which I have had to give away as there is no way we can eat 9 marrows. Mum said she didn't like to pick the courgettes when they were little as they were mine.

    *sighs*

Am not going away ever again.

You are not alone on the bolting front, much stuff is running straight off - it's been so hot - annoying though isn't it!

And chin up, it'll be raining soon

Sorry to hear about your veggies but pleased for you that you had a great holiday!
We had a similar problem with ours a couple of years ago when we went away for 3 weeks in August and asked our vegan friends who live a couple of doors away to harvest and eat things when they were ripe so that they didn't go to waste. Came back to find the french beans had gone to seed, The courgetts were marrows etc etc. They managed to cut the perpetual spinach so at least that hadn't bolted and the squashes but most things were ruined.....then we got blight so lost the tomatoes
Turned out that although they were vegan they had never seen vegetables that didn't arrive in a packet so had no idea when to pick them

Welcome back Mrs. Glad you had a good hols, but you're not alone.
Had an email from the friends who look after my place when I'm away and most of my carrots have bolted too. Pah.

We only went away for a week!

Turns out we had baking sun then torrential rain for several days in succession, the garden didn't know what to do with itself.

I have been getting stuck into it the afternoon, weeded the beds and tidying up, makes it look a bit more presentable. Our showers that have bene promised for 3 days have yet to appear... chances are they will come just as I am on the school run lol

And I forgot to add that all the elderflower champagne blew up. Maybe that's why the chickens tried to run away they thought someone was after them with a gun?! lol

I'm sorry, I'm mean, I had to laugh! Not because garden is ruined - I mean at "not wanting to pick things 'cos they were yours". If your mum didn't fancy eating it, then couldn't she have picked and put in fridge?

It is disappointing when things run to seed before you get to harvest - that happens to me with the easiest if veg to grow - radishes! My choy sum is heading that way too at the moment and I only have 4 plants in four (short) rows!

It is exceptionally hot at the moment and I think the garden is suffering. My hanging basket tom is frazzled in this heat and is showing 3 small toms but I think the plant is fried to a crisp. Can't seem to be able to achieve a hanging basket so full of toms they tumble everywhere! 3rd year of failure!

Still time to start again with more seeds though Janeyo?
