I need to save my e-mails to an external hard drive - but have no idea how to specifically save them ( talking about several hundred)

The best method would be to set up archive folders onto the external hard drive.
Dependant upon what mail aplication you are using will determine how you do this. Go into help on the mail application and search on archive, it will tell you if this is possible for yours and should give you blow by blow instructionsI am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport. -

Are you saving them to the external drive as a backup/copy or will the only copy reside they just go to the external drive?

Oh....ummm......could you please both type in basic English ???
I want to copy family tree and business e-mails only to take to France with me.
It's just a back up and the originals will stay on this computer.

if you are on Outlook you just need to save the .pst file, which is the bones of your Outlook but without all the front end gubbins - however that will save your whole application.
For archiving the email folder - as follows:
Right-click on the folder
Select Properties
Choose Autoarchive tab
Select Archive this folder using these settings
Select Move old items to:
Browse
....then select where on your pooter/EHD you wish to drop emaka

Yep- we're on Outlook Express.
I have to go out in a moment ( hadn't expected you all to reply so promptly!!!)
