  • Driving in France (more rules)

Yep,bet Al Murray is grinning at these ..........

    Breathalysers

On 1 March 2012 the French government confirmed that from 1 July 2012 drivers of all motor vehicles and motorcycles (excluding mopeds) must carry a breathalyser.

The regulation will be enforced from 1 November 2012 and anyone stopped after that date who fails to produce a breathalyser when requested will receive an on the spot fine of €11.

The official announcement states that one unused, certified breathalyser must be produced showing the French certification mark NF. Carrying two single-use breathalysers will ensure that if one is used or damaged, you will still have a spare to produce.

The breathalyser produced has to be in date - single-use breathalysers normally have a validity of twelve months.

    Satnav and speed camera alerts

Since 3 January 2012 French laws have prohibited drivers from carrying any device capable of detecting speed cameras. This includes products or devices able to warn or inform of the location of speed cameras e.g. satnav or gps systems capable of showing speed camera sites as Points of Interest.

The law is primarily aimed at speed camera detectors and sat-navs. It is unlikely that the French police will turn their attention to atlases but there is no guarantee this would be the case.

As well as the ban on warning devices, the French government is installing around 400 new, unsigned, fixed speed cameras as well as taking down signs indicating the location of existing camera sites.

If you have a satnav capable of displaying French camera locations in France then you must at least disable camera alerts. Contact the manufacturer for advice too as a software or database update is likely to be available that will remove camera data for France from the device.

If you have a satnav system built into your car then contact the vehicle manufacturer in the first instance.
    You have been warned

I saw an item on this yesterday. It warned drivers visiting France that the breathalyser kits cost about 3 times the normal price if you bought them on the ferry going over.
How long will it be before the UK introduce this?

      Compulsory equipment in France
      • Warning triangle - excludes motorcycles
      • Snow chains - must be fitted to vehicles using snow-covered roads in compliance
with the relevant road sign. Maximum speed limit 31 mph (50km/h)
      • Reflective jackets (EN471) - one reflective jacket which must be kept within the
passenger compartment of the vehicle and must be put on before exiting the vehicle
in an emergency/breakdown situation. (Motorcyclists see below)

If you are running late for the homeward ferry this is one to think about ......................

Holders of EU driving licences exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h will
have their licences confiscated on the spot by the police.

Further to the speed camera rule, the penalty seems a bit heavy

It is absolutely prohibited to carry, transport or use radar detectors. Failure to comply with this regulation involves a fine of up to 1500 Euros and the vehicle and/or device may be confiscated.

Further to the Breathalyser Rule ........

As of the 1st July 2012 it will be compulsory for drivers of all motor vehicles including motorcyclists, excluding mopeds to carry a breathalyser in their vehicle while travelling in France. This will not be enforced until the 1st November 2012, where persons failing to produce a breathalyser will receive a fine on the spot of €11.............

Presumably until them it is a slap on the wrist, but maybe a grape resident in France can shed more light on what will occur for an infringement in the interim period

Not quite sure off the top of my head BB

I bought a double pack from our local chemist for €3.60...expiry date is april 2014
I think it is a slapped wrist job if you haven't got one- cos they are in short supply. Apparently the makers can't fulfill the demand!
Interestingly it says on the pack to store it below 40C....ha ha ha.....even here in the north of France it can be well above that inside the car if left in the sun. I wonder how that will effect it's accuracy?????

You also need a set of spare bulbs BB

good find Nicos ^^^^,there are also unusual rules in other EU countries, like in Spain it is required for spectacle wearers to have a spare pair in the glove box, only found out on my third visit but on thinking about it,seemed such a sensible idea I now carry a spare pair in my car all the time

I understand the spare specs rule applies in France too.
I wear contacts, and now have to try and fit breathalyser as well as spare glasses case plus documentation in my jacket pocket on my motorbike.
And soon the look will be completely ruined by high vis too. Which will be quite comical on the bare arms of kids of all ages hooning around in (perfectly legal) shorts and flipflops.

I read about this breathalyser business on a kayaking forum.

Not only did I have no intention of ever visiting France, but I definitely wouldn't now on principle, I mean why the heck should I have to carry a device to check that I'm not over the legal limit for a substance that never enters my body? Utterly ridiculous! Perhaps they should enforce compulsory carrying of testing kits for crack cocaine, you know, just to be on the safe side
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

I always have a chuckle when I see the 'hunters' wearing all their camouflage gear to help them stalk their prey in secret .....plus their hi-vis jackets!!!!!
