  • Do you think this is mean?

We have been invited to an evening reception to a wedding. Me OH and the 2 boys.
There are 2 little printed coupons inside that say we can get a free drink from the bar complements of the groom's dad.

There are 4 of us invited... I would have thought there would have been 4 coupons in? Seeing as how soft drinks are almost as expensive as alcoholic ones.

Any Thoughts? I thought it was a bit half-baked, if it were me I would make sure there were enough coupons for all the invitees.

And yes I know it's good of him to pay for any drinks at all, just not how I would have done it.

Perhaps the poor fella can't afford to pay for more than 2 drinks per family?

Are you actually sure that the kids are invited? We had a no friends kids at our do otherwise it would have got out of hand and we wouldn't have been able to invite lots of our good friends and many of them would have had to leave early to take the kids home. Worked well for us and our friends enjoyed a grown up day / night.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

        Not Mean.....

        ....just a little thoughtless.

Probably the fellow thought that two adults would be getting two drinks from the bar....therefore as bars serve alcohol your children wouldn't need a voucher. I don't think he took it to the next logical step.

Knowing how much DD's wedding was, I expect they are catering for the adults only, drink wise. We didn't pay for any drinks at the reception only the champagne and wine at the sit down meal.

It does seem odd..you either give everyone a free drink or no-one. Unless there is going to be free squash for the kids.

We were at a wedding reception on sat eve. It was in a large chain hotel. The bride and groom had married abroad and so had already had a lot of expense.

The first part of the evening the bar was not free to anyone and drinks were VV expensive - a glass red wine £8, a glass of coke £1.85, a coffee was £3.35

Part way throught the evening the hosts paid for a open bar. In 1 hour 10 mins £1500 was spent. !

I cannot believe that these hotel chains can charge so much.

Seems a bit odd to me, but children can be kind of invisible to some folk! We went to an evening wedding reception last summer where soft drinks for the children were free, maybe this is the case with yours?

When we have ours we are doing the sparkly wine/bucks fizz/OJ thing for speeches and toasts after the ceremony, but have also sorted with hotel to have jugs of squash and plastic cups on the buffet tables so the kiddies can help themselves. Beyond that everyone buys their own.

Budget very tight, so this was the best way we could come up with so that everyone gets a drink on us, they are even going to serve the plain OJ in champagne glasses so the kids can feel a bit more grown up .

I'd say they think you'll leave the kids at home. Its unusual here for children to be invited to the evening reception, simply because of the late hours.
A good beginning is half the work.

If they are inviting kiddies as well,my guess is that ther will be jugs of squash available.
Maybe take thier cups/bottles with you just in case.

I might be old fashioned and I know people do things differently now but I think a much nicer way to do it is to deposit a sum of money at the bar and designate a member of the family to greet guests as they arrive and take them to the bar and get them a drink. It's called hospitality. I've never heard of anyone sending out tickets for the bar.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

We are definitely all invited, all the names are on the invite.
We prob wouldn't have gone, as it doesn't start until an hour past when my children are normally in bed and it's almost an hour's drive
                            .
But it seems we can't go anyway - we are on holiday - doh!

Think I will pass my drink tickets on to someone else.
