  • Disgusted by Wyevale

i was in my local wyevale ( findern derby ) today and was perusing the vegetable section when i came across the childs veg promotions.
now i'm all for encouraging children to grow healthy veg etc but these little yelow pots with smiley faces were priced at £1.49 reasonable you think!!!

well 1.49 for 1 carrot in a pot some had 2
    3 mini pop corn
    2/3 beans in a pot
what a rip off for people trying encourage the kids do they think that one carrot will feed your family its only in a 3 inch pot.
also 4 borlotta? beans in a pot £1.99

and the other veg was so dry in places the compost was comng away from the edge of the pots.
it really gets me when the large garden centres grab a trend and do there best to rip off everybody trying to do there bit.........

RANT OVER NOW MUST MOVE ON..............
this will be a battle from the heart

About 2yrs ago Wyevale staff were somewhat dismisive when I asked for comfrey - 'we don't do that type of plant'. I've not been back especially as I found the best ever nursery!

I went to one of their veg days...You are never too old to learn...but the poor bloke doing the talk didn't want to be there you could tell. He was just one of the staff and didn't have a clue...poor chap. These people were asking him all sorts of questions he could not answer.

thats where most of these places fall down
they dont train staff in products they are selling
so when you ask questions they dont know what to answer and its a shame really coz if they did know the products properly they would make more sales for the store and prob enjoy the job more
dont take for granted that you hold dear
for once its gone you will miss it
        and thats to late

If you're near Derby, give Swarkstone nurseries a try, its a nursery as oppossed to a garden centre. Their garden plants are quite pricey but I've always found all their plants to be very good. We only use Findern for the fish centre, everything I've ever bought from their was terrible.

I'll second this.....I even joined their group on Faceache.

It's like a candy shop in there - and the chilli plants they sell are lovely. They also do a range of veg at very good prices, all grown there. Great place.

the kids plants aren't exactly designed to feed a family of 5 they are just a cute way of getting kids interested, like putting cartoon characters on food packets ....

i understand that but 1 or 2 carrots is outrageous surely you must agree at that.

There was someone selling 6 radish seedlings on ebay recently, for 99p as a first bid plus 2.84 postage. Spring onions as well....plus other seedlings. It's not just the big companies taking the *.

I don't mind Wyevale when I know exactly what I want, and it isn't a live plant......
Like most big companies, they mostly have untrained staff (may have the odd one who knows his/her section) and if they know anything it is what you might read off the labels...
Near here there is a local GC, attached to a PYO farm that specialises in Daffodils, followed by Asparagus. If we want information, that is where we go.

oh yeah i agree, but it's one of those little things grannies will buy for the grandkids, ... to let them grow something of their own, if they want to grow a garden full they will buy a whole packet, they are just a cheap novelty ....FOR KIDS
