  • Deja Vu all over again

I've just bought the lovely cookbook 'Arabella Boxer's Garden Cookbook' - I don't think there is a single vegetable not covered by one of her recipes.

    In her introduction she says:

"As meat grows ever more expensive, my enthusiasm for it has waned still further. Contrary to the general propaganda urging us to experiment with cheaper cuts and learn to make them into sustaining meals ...." Could have been written this week

The book was written in 1974 - was there a recession/depression then as well - I was courting and therefore not interested!

She also comments that on fish she would rather buy expensive salmon from time to time, rather than buying cheap cod three times a week - so some things have changed.

Two recipes I won't be trying are cold lentil soup and turnip souffle!

I'd have a go at the cold lentil soup - I love lentils - but the souffle's still up for grabs!

I'm a bit of a fan myself, it just sounded worng. There are several other lentil soup recipes though, and a lentil vinaigrette. She isn't a vegetarian, just decided that we don't do enough with veg - she does say how much she admires the French and Americans for their imaginative use of veg though, so I think that may be another change in the last 34 years
