  • Could you close the door please?

I expect this will only mean something to those of us oop north, but I've just seen a handwritten sign at the entrance to a hospital department:

    "Pull Door To"

    Tickled me

I bet some people will be wondering what they they have to 'pull the door to' to 'do'! I saw similar on a shop door the other day, I think it might have been in Leeds & it said 'We are open, please pull the door to though as it's a bit nippy!'

Was going to say put wood in 'ole! but was beat to it.

When I said that to the guys in work here(wales) they were like, to quote:

"WHAT THE **** ARE YOU ON ABOUT?"

            hehe.

As I'm north of Watford Gap and considered to be northern by my southern friends (and boyfriend!) I say this too.

I 'attempted' to order a chip batch in a southern fish & chips shop once - he had no idea what I was talking about until my fella stepped in and said "She means chips in a roll, mate "

I asked for a 'Pea Mix' here in wales, and the guy stared at me blankly.

I was like, put some chips in said box and a scoop of peas on top please! Gee!

I'm not 'North' (London parents and grew up in hearing range of Heathrow), but the instruction "pull the door to" is one I understand with no problem. It doesn't mean exactly the same as 'shut' though, If the door is shut, it is latched (or equivalent) 'to' means closed without the latch engaging..... (well it did for my parents)

Depends on which bit of 'Ooop North' you hail from I think!

My dad was born and bred in Sheffield, Yorkshire, but my mum was born and raised in Burnley, Lancashire and she never let us all forget it. She used to say that Yorkshire women made more noise when they washed the dishes so everybody knew they were doing it! Amongst other things!
