  • Confession time.

Last week I was off work, and had a free day on Friday - LadyWayne was back at work, and Bean was at the childminders. So I tackled the jobs I can't really do when he's about.

I decided that the study needed a long overdue clearout. It gets used as a bit of a dumping ground - it's tucked away, behind a door, next to the utility room.

During my clearout I rediscovered a number of seed boxes/tins.

Upon going through them I discovered a large number of seed packets with dates ranging from 3-4 years old ("sow by 2009/8" etc).

Having had a few no-shows from seeds I've used out of old packets I decided to throw them away. Yes, I said it - I threw them in the bin.

    I felt terrible.

(I am however, looking forward to re-stocking later this year...)

Nooooooooooooo Wayne! You should test their viability before you throw them away. I have several antiques in my box, but that's where they are staying. I don't hoard anything else, so I don't feel guilty.

I was having a "proper" clearout - taking no prisoners.

        Anyone want a desk chair?

Upside is, my mum has a nice bag full for the charity shop.

I am also guilty as charged, I too have a huge collection of seeds with many well out of date.

Can anyone recommend the best way to test viability? Should I bother, or simply have a clear out and then have fun with the seed catalogues?

            I'm going with a cleansing option b.

Best way to test viability is to put on damp kitchen paper, and try germinating I think.

I'm ace at clearing things out!

                      OH's old bits 'n' bobs that he hasn't used for years - into the bin (denying all knowledge when, several months later, aforementioned bits 'n' bobs are missed);

The Reetlets old, broken 'grown out of' toys are merrily thrown out or passed onto pre-school or the charity shops - denying all memory of said items when one or other Reetlet suddenly recalls, several months later, that she has the exact same toy/jigsaw/game that she has seen in Sue Ryder or played at school "Haven't I mummy?".

Of course NONE of my things are ready for the skip/bin/charity shop yet because I use them all, ALL of the time

I got (very kindly) given a very old packet of mignonette seeds for our centenary garden . They were pre little foil packets the the kind grape who passed them on said "I've found these at the bottom of a bag and don't think they'll germinate but have a go anyway "
Guess what.. we have a fantastic clump of sweetly smelling mignonette which everyone comments on ....proves a point really doesn't it ?
