  • Compost Cost

Have you noticed that Compost has gone up this year.
Last year it was 3 75lit bags £10.
    Now its 3 60lit bags for £12.
Ok with the new Wyvale Card you can get 4 for £12.

Two weeks ago I bought 2 enormous bags - 150 litres each bag, at B&Q for £6.47 each - actually it was 10% less than that as my OH used his grumpy old man card.

By my reckoning that's the same as buying 3 x 75l for under a tenner.

Mind you, I can't comment on the quality as I haven't opened them yet.
    Never say never!

i got a 75 ltr all purpose peat free compost from b&q's own range and found it very woody with big bits of wood and bark looks like it went through a thick rough cut shredder then just left it looks just like you stripped a tree of its bark and just put it on top so i added a little compost from another growbag just to hide the top layer. wont be buying that again

a month ago, 150L bags in B+Q were 2 for £10 , then they were 6.75 each no offer, now there 120L and 6.75 each no offer, so i went elsewere as i needed about 1000L of it

Homebase now has an offer on 2 for about the same as B+Q had them, still 120L i think

Netto, have growbags for 99p , work out at 3.2p per litre, now they also have compost for 2.75 (somewere round there) at about 4.2p per litre te growbags are very woodchippy type compost, the raspberrys seem to like it

Asda, have the 70L ones for something like 2 for 6.00, so its 140l for 6.00 , cheaper than BQ, and it seems ok as well

All the other types had no lumps of plastic in them so they must be better then the BQ stuff. All the B+Q stuff i have had for the last year has been full of lumps of wood, stones and what looks like shredded white carrier bags

Apparently all manufacturers are reducing the size of their bags from 80 to 60 litres due to 'health and safety'. They're worried that we might all put our backs out trying to lift them. The plan also seems to be to keep the price for 60 litres the same as it was for 80.

We only use peat-free, and the B&Q stuff is awful, I bought one bag a few years ago and wouldn't touch it again.

There was talk of baning the 150lt bags for H&S. In the building trade the bags have got smaller for the same reason.

There is the old ploy of reducing the volume but keeping the price the same.

I am going to start mixing Coucil Compost with purchased to make it go further.

I noticed the switch to smaller bags last weekend. Flippin' cheek! Well, my own production of the stuff moves up a gear this year. I've got the manure supply sorted, ha ha!

I must ask how much it is at our lottie shop. I have been buying B & Q compost for years and for seed sowing found they didnt germinate very well lots of dissapointing results, this year I bought B & Q seed compost and its much better ( £3.98 ). Then I use the other for potting on. £6.98 for a large bag too big for me to manage on my own (150ltr ? )

We bought 3 120l bags for £15 at a local place, thought that was quite reasonable. It's a known brand but can't remember which one.
