  • Car Insurance

I need help renewing my car insurance. At the moment I am with Tesco as I get staff discount. I also have breakdown cover and temporary replacement car cover ( fully comp ). My query is as I dont drive more than 12 miles ( 6 miles each way ) once or twice a week term time and ocassionally 12 miles each way max do I need the extra cover at a cost on renewing £136 extra on my policy. I have had this on my previous policy's because of the milage I do. I have an old Nissan Micra ( L )

Have you checked the comparison sites Jackie, I saved a lot of money by switching insurers and that was going up to fully comp from 3rd party!

I'm about to renew my insurance and i've thought about comparison sites, but its a mine field out there, i've no idea which one to go on or which one would be the best, i've been quoted £291 fully comp, that's with my present ins, but then i've got another £70 pound added on because i pay it monthly D.D, which i think scandalous, not everyone can afford to pay things in cash these days.

Just spoke to my eldest son and his gf was qouted £100 extra on renewing her insurance, the insurance ran out so she phoned for a qoute and another £100 was added on !!!!!! she has gone elsewhere. I have phoned mine and got about £50 taken off for having a different breakdown cover.

My milage is about 100 miles max a month.

I got a lower quote from the same insurer I was already with than their renewal quote on a comparison site. Rang them up and they matched it. If you definitely do that few miles then get your annual mileage set really low. It should bring down the price.

I have no idea, and I'm just floating an idea here ... wouldn't it be cheaper to get about by taxi? With the occasional bus?

              * no, I wouldn't suggest you get a bike Jackie

I wouldn't go for the cheapest - it's the service that matters if you have to make a claim, not the monthly cost, I think.

Mind you, I'm with Tesco for my pets insurance - I've had to make two claims in 10 years, and they couldn't have been better. Prompt at answering the phone, too - and they say nice things like 'I do hope Domino feels better soon - they are a worry, aren't they?' etc etc.

Lol I do have a bike

Taxi wouldnt be a good idea as I use the car to go to and from work only 1 mile but before and after an 11 hour night shift no way would I walk. I pick my grandson up from school 6 miles away once a week, bus would take an hour to get there 10 min walk across the bridge, walk back across the bridge in all weathers wait for 20 mins for bus an hour to get back no way. Take daughter to rowing once or twice a week same as school run same place buses every hour after 6pm. Back to public transport not working for public.
Lottie about mile ish away no buses. Only takes half hour to walk but laden with veg etc wouldnt want to do.
I have only had my own car for a few years, I do walk a lot but the car is there when I need it. OH uses his car for our longer journeys.

I would check your policy most that accept monthly DD will requere you to pay the rest of the years premium in full before they will settle a claim.
