  • Building our new house at last

It's taken a year and a half with loads of delays but tomorrow clearance starts on our plot and we can start building our new house. I don't know if I'm more excited or nervous.

The house will be fab but the downside is that the garden is only 95sq metres - so lots of creative planting and loads of pots. This will be the last summer in our house here and I love the garden so much - but on to new things, and of course Mariell and I will have our fab walled garden sorted by next Spring.

Every best wish for the building of your new house Amanda.
You'll be able to do wonders in what is quite a small garden - just a bit of creative thinking - you won't fail on that.
Then you have that fabulous walled garden. All will be well. Enjoy.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Congrats to you - we searched high and wide, but couldn't find any plots big enough round here. The ones I did find that had ptential they were wanting to put 8 houses on!

Instead we have extended this one and are about to extend again( builders come today!), as I wanted the land and the house was kind of secondary. If I could make the house as I wanted it then that was ok. We have about 1/3 acre now and will end up with a 6 bedder after the second extension. Then I can plan for baby no 3 - yay

Good luck, It is so exciting to make you 'on paper' plans come true! Remember - deep breaths required at all times

From one self-builder to another, congratulations, and best of luck. We found the structure happened very quickly, but its all the detail that takes the time. Our house has looked finished (from the outside) for about six months now, but we've still got all the doors to hang, the loft to finish insulating and two bannisters to fit before building regs will sign us off. Then the decorator can come and do the glossing (I tried but was rubbish) and the carpet can be fitted - then and only then will we move in (There are some piccies on my profile page - and we've only got a small garden too 12m x 10m, its amazing what you can pack in).

                  Wishing you every success.
