    UFOs?

Now to be serious. Are there any sporting facilities in that direction? Those lights can be very bright. It could be almost anything any chance of a pic?

If it is a star then it is probably Venus. Quite low down, in the west, just as it turns dark.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

good old wiltshire- renowned for spooky lights in the sky!!! in fact, for the last month or so i have seen an extremely bright light in the sky. it doesnt seem to change position, and is brighter than an ordinary star. it is to the north, and i am in a county to the north of you.

It's definitely Venus. It's the brightest object in the night sky after the moon, quite unmistakeable. If you get some binoculars you may even be able to make out that it is a crescent shape at the moment. A month ago you might have seen Mercury very close to it very low down.

Have a look at these pictures.

definately not the north star, if memory serves me it is to the east and lower than the north star ( i will re-check that position tonight, but when i first saw it i did look for the north star to make sure it wasnt that) , and it is brighter than everything else. it is a bigger, much brighter, light than a star. not as big as a full moon tho! i am seeing it from when it gets dark, onwards til i go to bed. my son says it is further east by the time he goes to bed, hours later than me, but that would be the movement of the earths orbit.
