Google ranking is very important for blogging and a lot of other dynamic websites these days. Meta tags have pretty much been ditched for other more modern systems.

Perhaps it boosts the ranking (or whatever it is) for the creative design site it's tacked onto? Or maybe I'm just cynical

It is normally only the linked page that is boosted by google. So if you link to my homepage and I link to yours, we'll both have an outbound link to another site. When you have a few to very high profile sites and back again to yours, Google will see your site as a 'good' site and come back to it more often for more content and your presence in google should increase.

That's why a lot of websites are now incorporating blogs - to get readers (visitors) and more google keywords, etc....

It is are rather complicated :-(

Yes, but,I still don't see why I or you, more to the point, want to boost your Google presence? What do you gain?
My blog isn't for any purpose other than to amuse me, and if people read it all well and good, but it makes no difference to me if 20 people read it or none at all. The only reasons I can see for being bothered about 'Google presence', 'Google keywords' and the quantity of visitors is if you're a) selling something or b) have advertising on your site that needs a certain amount of viewers to earn money.
But, as I said, I am undoubtedly cynical.

My blog is just for me to record what we are doing....if anyone else is vaguely interested then that's fab but if not, then no bother.
