  • Blackberry genius anywhere?

Not the fruit before you zealous mods look at moving me, but the technological wizardry that goes by the same name.
I bought one on the way out here and am having real problems with the email bit.
Is there a genius that can assist?

My partner is in IT and he had major problems setting one up for his boss - he curses them. tell me more about what the problem is and I'll ask him if you like.

You're not trying to use an hotmail address by any chance?

      What's the problem?

Is it the Storm or one of the older models?

        Hmm. Already I am lost.
Its a Blackberry Curve 8900 according to the blurb.
The problem is: (I shall just excuse my technical incompetence before I start)
In the wizard introduction thingy, when it gets to setting up email stuff I should be given 3 options
        1. BB internet service option
        2.BB enterprise server option
        3.BB desktop redirector option

Number 1 is the one "most common for individual users."
Only I dont have it, or at least I cant find it. I only appear to have option number 2, which then asks me for email work accounts blah blah and server synchro blah blah.

My daughter was right. "Dad, dont buy it. You wont be able to use it and you will leave it in your drawer like your Ipod and other technical stuff you cant use."

Curses, I hate my offspring being right.

          I agree with your daughter!

          Is this any help?

BlackBerry Email Set Up | The Mobile Fun Blog

Option 2 sounds like BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) the link above says: blah, blah..."Set up for BlackBerry on BES will normally be done by your IT department prior to you receiving the device. Depending on the security settings on your BlackBerry, you may be able to add a BIS account onto the device as well, this way you will be able to access personal email at the same time. A word of warning though, this could breach your employers IT policy and get you into trouble, so its best to check with them first!"

Sounds like you need to have set Option 1 (BIS) up with your service provider - the above link has links for common ones and what to do when you have. Is that what you need?

Sadly, I agree with my daughter too, but it didnt stop me thinking that just once, I could buy something and understand it.

            WRONG AGAIN

Will try that link Manda, but will probably get frustrated with that too cos it wont say in simple easy steps for a bloke that doesnt read the manual.

I've just edited the post - but basically have you first registered with your phone service provider to use the blackberry?

To get started, follow the link below to take you to the set up site for your network. Remember though, that in order for you to be able to set your device up you will need to make sure that you are on a pay monthly plan, not pay as you go, and that you have contacted your service provider and asked them to add the BlackBerry service onto your account. If not you’ll need to do that before you can go any further. If you get the message "This BlackBerry is registered with another provider" then this would suggest that the BlackBerry service is not activated. You will probably find that there is an additional monthly fee for the BlackBerry service.

Better contact your phone service provider then? Who is it?

Option one is if you get your email from an ISP....Tiscali,Sky,BT,Demon...
Option two is if you have your own exchange server....so you are your IPS....Nog@nog.com
Option three is if you are using outlook and download your email to your PC. You then get 2 copies of your email one to the PC and one to the Berry.

With option 3 when you change a contact it will not auto update it till you scync with the PC.

It sounds like you do not need option 2.

If you have internet only blackberry account which used to be called a prosumer (thats what I call it when I flog em to my clients) then you need to register with your provider, they should have provided you with a URL, you then create an account but you will need some details from the box (usually), once you have created the account you can then setup other email accounts within your login. The prosumer versions are not bad to set up, it the BES that a right pain.
PS Make sure that you provider has provisioned the phone properley, have you got GPRS (or maybe EDGE) in the upper right hand corner of the phone

                        I got the Storm.

I added an email account by:
typing in my email address into the first box
typing the password into the second box

It worked and 20 mins later emails started coming through.

Why do they make these things so difficult for you boys to understand?

You probably cheated and looked at the manual though Zazen!!
I also dont have boxes to type things into, which wouldnt make things quite so easy.
My service provider is Bouygetel, and trying to explain to them that I have a Blackberry will be about as easy as explaining molecular physics to a giraffe. (Apologies in advance to all giraffe's that are molecular physisists).

Nog, I only get one option, the other 2 are absent. Thats probably cos I need to register my Blackberry with my phone provider.

TEB, I'm sure all of that is perfectly clear to most people, but sadly I'm a bear of very little brain, and I didnt actually understand what you said. Sorry, but I'm computer numb.

Thanks all. Guess it will sit in the drawer with my Ipod and all the other technical stuff I've bought and cant use.

And if you're reading this daughter of mine.... Stop laughing, you're not too old to go over my knee you know!!

There you go - surely this bit cannot be difficult (look at their web site under faq, or under the blackberry website faq. You will not be the only chap in the world who has come across this. In fact, I am betting that this is the number 1 query they have)

And if it IS beyond the wit of man.....it won't be beyond the wit of daughter!
