i cant believe my daughter ate the gooseberry cause shes really picky with her food, but i did laugh at my hubbys face when he tried one, sour wasint the word for them,

Peas are great kid food. They don't tend to like broad beans though, or red mustard.

I remember as a kid I was eating everything straight from the bushes,trees and the ground-nothing was too sour or bitter.Green gooseberry,redcurrants,apples,pears hard as a stone,walnuts still in green shells-rubbing them on the pavement and yellow-brownish hands for 2 weeks.Now the only thing I like are strawbs just before the ripening

Its a great feeling isnt it? Last summer, I had a mate and his mrs pop in, with their nipper, at the same time as my grandkids were over.
My mate couldnt believe his eyes as he watched his littl'un join in with the 2 grandkids picking the peas and scoffing them.
"I couldnt get her to eat peas at all at home ....." as she picked another pod off and split it open.
Great feeling!!

Awww thats great. My kids love their veggies but have never had any we've grown ourselves before.
My Dads potatoes are raved over so I hope they like our own home grown ones as much.
I have grown some snow peas (I think) stupid me threw away the packet

I have got some rhubarb coming now too (donation from my Mum who used to cut us a piece and hand us an egg cup full of sugar to dunk it in..no wonder I have so many fillings!)
I'm really looking forward to our first meal of home grown stuff.
It will be quite a buzz to know my hard work has been worth it. (fingers crossed everything grows ok now)

Ardroil, reading your post I think I felt as good as you - it brought back memories.

When my children were young I used to grow peas but never cook them - the kids and friends would pick and eat them in the garden. Definitely a convenience food!

Just remembered the story my neighbour told me:she went to her garden to pick up some peas for tea for her kids.Every single pod was empty...
