  • Ariels new washing gel

    Anyone tried it?

Wash at temperatures as low as 15 degrees...

Unfortunately we can't use it - anything other than Persil makes me itch like mad! Doubt it will be long before they're all doing it though.

Has to be a good thing though surely?

I always use Persil Non-Bio as my son (now grown) would itch if I used anything else - he had severe eczema as a child, is fine now.

One thing though, when the detergent manufacturers talk about the low temps we can use to wash it makes me wonder what chemicals are in there that will dissolve/get rid of dirt at such low temps - and consequently what is being rinsed out into the environment.

i can't use ariel either but then i do most of my washes on low heat, unless they are really dirty .... most of the stuff i wear is dark or black anyway ...... though whites don't do too well on low.

I buy one bottle of fairy washing liquid once a year, and every time it gets half full, I put 3 scoops of soda crystals and top it up with water...it lasts the full year and still looks blue-ish by the end of it.

Still smells of fairy at the end as well.

I can't use ariel, my mum did when I was a child once, never again due to the itching.

Another great tip from MOM!!Cheers Zazen I'll be trying that!
I agree with Maytreefrannie that it makes you wonder what chemical nasties they're adding to make it work?
I either use a brand called ecos or just lately the Coop have brought out one.Lightly soiled stuff gets done at 30~lottie stuff 40.If the stains don't come out then they get allocated to the lottie clothes pile!

after the third washing machine that went on me just after the guarantee ran out, I have just started to rent one, it's lovely!!

what impressed me most is it has a quick wash 30 minutes cycle, and a daily 1 hour cycle, but the best bit is that although each cycle has a temp setting, you can alter it up or down with a little button, so still use the short cycles, but adjust the temp to suit the 'dirtiness'.That alongside the variable spin speeds from 0 to 1400 has me in love with the bloomin thing, and no repair costs.
this new gel comes out down here tomorrow i think, so I will be getting some to try, however, it does look very small and I wonder how much you have to use and how economical it will turn out to be, plus again, the concern about what they put in it to make it work at that low a temp.

I don't use any detergent, just eco balls at 30 degrees. Works fine.

I'm thinking of eco balls, once my fairy bottle and soda crystals run out.

I can't take the credit for it, it's from the money saving expert forum - search for washing gloop.

We started using Surcare a few years ago because anything else makes hubby come out in a rash on his legs.

FHG: please do - I'll definitely be getting some and if you got them online then even better.

If you say they work, I'm willing to give them a jolly good go.

I always wash lotty clothes at 40 degrees, cotton cycle (put some Vanish on the stains). 30 degrees just doesn't clean stuff.

I can't afford Ecover every wash, so alternate with a supermarket own-brand.

I'm so glad it's not just me and my family that get the "itchies" after using a biological powder! Fairy or Persil is the only thing I use, though I think I'll give Zazen's idea with the soda crystals a go - anything to save a bob or two!
